When John was elected to the White House, the Kennedy family arranged for a family friend to be appointed for two years as Ted was two years short of the Constitutional minimum age for Senators. As early as law school he had a problems with alcohol and automobiles, in 1969 the car he was driving went off a bridge and his passenger was drowned. He ran for president in 1980 but was unable to wrest the Democratic nomination from Carter. Ted and his wife Joan were divorced in 1981, and though the ’80s were productive years for him in the Senate his tumultuous personal life was also frequently in the news. He remarried (Victoria) in 1992. He was diagnosed as having a malignant glioma, a brain tumor not easily treated, and he died at home fifteen months later.

Ted Kennedy quotes:

I regard as indefensible the fact that I did not report the accident to the police immediately.

I hope for an America where we can all contend freely and vigorously, but where we will treasure and guard those standards of civility which alone make this nation safe for both democracy and diversity.

Ted Kennedy

In short, I hope for an America where neither “fundamentalist” nor “humanist” will be a dirty word, but a fair description of the different ways in which people of good will look at life and into their own souls.

Integrity is the lifeblood of democracy. Deceit is a poison in its veins.

Ted Kennedy
It has been seven years since my first election to the Senate. You and I share many memories; some of them have been glorious, some have been very sad. The opportunity to work with you and serve Massachusetts has made my life worthwhile.

Ted Kennedy
It’s better to send in the Peace Corps than the Marine Corps.

Ted Kennedy
Make no mistake about it! There is an organized movement against organized labor and it’s called the Bush Administration.

Ted Kennedy
My brother [Robert] need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life, to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it.

Our struggle is not with some monarch named George who inherited the crown. Although it often seems that way.
