When she was just three years old, she scored a national ad spot for Shake-N-Bake because she was the pig-tailed, doe-eyed sweetie who couldn’t get enough of their crunchy chicken. Since then, she has changed into a stunning blonde rocker/actress who doesn’t mind wearing black eyeliner and has earned a bad reputation as a diva.
She went from being the adorable Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas to the cunning queen bee on Gossip Girl, as you may have witnessed. As the lead singer of her band, The Pretty Reckless, she is also quite the rocker.
Shake ‘N’ Bake
Taylor, a St. Louis native, had support from her parents to pursue acting, and at the age of six, she was cast as Honey Bee Swan in her first role in a feature film, The Prophet’s Game. The following year, starring Jim Carrey in the holiday movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Taylor extended her reputation as a child star in yet another endearing role as the button-nosed Cindy Lou Who.
After landing a role in the Mel Gibson film We Were Soldiers in 2002, Taylor returned to the world of family entertainment with roles in Hansel & Gretel (2002), Saving Shiloh (2006), and Underdog (2008).
Beginning Gossip and Becoming Careless
But when she was cast as Jenny Humphrey on the CW show Gossip Girl, things really got hot for the native actress. Taylor played the good Brooklyn girl striving to fit in at her posh Manhattan private school in the television series. But Taylor’s character quickly changed into the cunning, nasty girl after picking up tricks from the queen bees who tormented her in high school.
Taylor’s on-screen character didn’t seem to be the only thing that was altering before our eyes; her off-screen appearance also appeared to be darkening as she started wearing barely there clothing and around her eyes with thick layers of dark makeup.
The public first learned about Taylor’s off-screen endeavor—front woman of the band The Pretty Reckless—around the same time that this on- and off-screen transformation started to take place.
In the fall of 2010, the band’s debut album was published, featuring songs like “Make Me Wanna Die,” “Miss Nothing,” and “Just Tonight.” The similarities between Taylor and a youthful, carefree Courtney Love were not ignored.
Taylor’s position on Gossip Girl eventually got deleted off the show for its fifth season as a result of her music, fashion choices, and challenging conduct garnering more attention than her appearance on the show. Tim Gunn criticized the studded rebel after playing a cameo appearance, calling her “a diva! She was pitiful; she couldn’t even recall her lines, and there weren’t even that many of them. Why are we all being held captive by this brat, I wondered to myself.
It seems unlikely that this dark rider from the wrong side of the bridge will remain a resident of the Upper East Side for very long. But will this raccoon-eyed Pretty Reckless child actress end up being another example of a young actor gone wrong? Time will only tell. Better luck the next time, T.
