About Tamar Braxton
While music aficionados likely think of Braxton only as have been a successful R&B singer. Television viewers had knows Tamar Braxton more as a cast member on the hit reality show Braxton Family Values than as a talk show host. That all changed when Braxton lit up the little screen as co-host of The Real, from 2013 until 2016. The syndicated panel talk show co-starred Tamera Mowry, Jeannie Mai, Adrienne Bailon and Loni Love and debuted nationally in 2014.
Tamar was born on Saint Patrick’s Day to Michael and Evelyn Braxton in Severn. She grew up in Severn, Maryland, the youngest of the six Braxton children. Her father, Michael, was pastor of the Braxton’s church and Evelyn was a singer. Mom’s passion was passed to Tamar and siblings Tamar, she started started singing as a toddler and all of the Braxton children were entered into the church choir. When they were in their teens they had formed a five-member sibling group group, and by the time Tamar was 12, she was signed with Arista Records, alongside sisters Toni, Traci, Towanda and Trina.
The sisters recorded one album as a group of five, “Good Life” reached number 79 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1990. As the single failed to go anywhere the label tried to better promote the group, but likewise were met with failure. As the label struggled to market the group which included Toni Braxton who was in her 20s, and Tamar Braxton who was just 12, to the same demographic, the groups was eventually dropped.
Toni was soon after signed by LaFace and Tamar and her sisters became part of a backup group of singers for her. The remaining Braxtons, not including Toni and Traci, eventually signed with Atlantic and released So Many Ways in 1996 to moderate success. While Toni’s career had begun to pick up Tamar and her sisters supported her growth, even joining Toni on her solo tour.
Tamar signed with DreamWorks Records to launch her solo career, releasing her eponymous album in 2000. The album included the hit song “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me,” which reached the Top 30 on the R&B chart. While the album received good reviews, it never truly found a wide audience and became her only album with DreamWorks. Undeterred, Tamar continued to support her sister Toni’s albums as a backup singer and signed to Casablanca. However, her career didn’t move much until she began appearing as herself in the reality series Braxton Family Values. The reality show followed the exploits of the Braxton sisters.
A few years later, she released her second solo album. The LP, Love and War, released in 2013, was Braxton’s breakthrough. It debuted as number 2 on the Billboard 200 selling over 500,000 copies in the US alone.
Only two months after the release of her successful Love and War record, she released Winter Loversland, however it failed to gain traction selling only 8,000 copies in the US. However, she still received three Grammy nominations for Love and War. Tamar also starred in a spin-off of Braxton Family Values, in the TV series Tamar and Vince which added to her audience. Between the yeas of 2013 and 2016, she co-hosted the TV series The Real, for a total of 409 episodes, and also began to make several appearances as an actress, including in The Soul Man and Being Mary Jane.
In 2017, Braxton signed with Entertainment One as part of a $1 million deal with the label, leaving Epic Records. In 2018, Braxton and sister Towanda guest starred on their sister Toni’s music video “Long as I Live”. Tamar also made appearances on Celebrity Big Brother as a contestant for 13 episodes, and returned to acting in the 2020 film True To The Game 2 alongside Vivica A, as well as appearing as Sasha in Kingdom Business.
