About Talib Kweli

Talib Kweli Greene was born on October 3, 1975 and is an American rapper, entrepreneur, broadcaster and activist with an estimated net worth of $5 million. Talib Kweli means “seeker/student of truth” in Arabic. His parents were both parents as college professors, and the young Talib Kweli showed a great interest in writing.

Eventually he was drawn to hip-hop artists who voiced a significant message, he didn’t like rappers who talked rubbish but rather those who truly had something to say. He drew his inspiration from the likes of Rakim and Brand Nubian to KRS-One and Ice Cube, among others. During his teen years, Talib Kweli continued to hone his writing skills in the form of hip-hop. In high school, he would meet fellow Brooklyn native Dante Smith who would later be known as Mos Def. After that, it was a wrap.

American rapper, entrepreneur, and activist Talib Kweli earned recognition with fellow Brooklyn rapper Mos Def, with the group Black Star. Talib Kweli has an estimated net worth of $5 million dollars, as of 2023.

In 1994, Kweli was introduced to DJ Hi-Tek. A rapper who would further encourage his aspirations in hip-hop. Then three years later, in 1997, Talib contributed to the debut album DJ Hi-Tek’s underground group known as Mood. The group which consists of Main Flow, Donte and Jahson still records together to this day.

Talib Kweli truly set things off with his Rawkus Records debut in 1998. Alongside his pal Mos Def, Kweli released the highly esteemed self-titled Black Star album. Two years later, Kweli and Hi-Tek formed the duo Reflection Eternal, and released Train of Thought, yet another critically acclaimed album.

In 2002, Kweli released his first solo album, Quality. It was another critically acclaimed project despite not achieving much commercial success. While Talib Kweli has only ever had one Gold record, he is regarded as a true talent by fans as well as his peers. 50 Cent has named Kweli one of his favorite rappers and Jay-Z has also expressed his feelings about Kweli. He has said, “If skills sold, truth be told, I’d probably be, lyrically Talib Kweli.”

Kweli released his second solo album, The Beautiful Struggle, in 2004. Soon afterwards, Kweli established his own record label, Blacksmith Records. Acclaimed hip-hop artist Jean Grae as well as the group Strong Arm Steady have joined Kweli’s label, with talks of MF Doom following suit and Rakim releasing his next album through Blacksmith.

‘I started rapping because I wanted people to hear what I have to say. I want as many people to hear me as possible, and I do everything in my power to make that pop.” (Talib Kweli in an interview with RapReviews.com.)
