About Susan Tedeschi
Tedeschi first met Derek Trucks, the slide guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band as well as the bandleader and lead guitarist of The Derek Trucks Band, in New Orleans during the summer of 1999 while she was opening for the band on their summer tour. In addition to developing a romantic relationship with one another, Tedeschi and Trucks went on numerous tours together under the moniker Soul Stew Revival. This included players from The Derek Trucks Band, musicians from Susan Tedeschi’s band, and other musicians who traveled with them. Among these musicians was Duane Trucks, Trucks’ younger brother and a drummer. In 2008, they introduced a horn section that consisted of three members.
Tedeschi was reared in Norwell, Massachusetts, but she was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 9, 1970, to parents of Italian descent. Tedeschi spent her childhood there. She is the daughter of Dick Tedeschi, the granddaughter of Nick Tedeschi, and the great-granddaughter of Angelo Tedeschi, who established Tedeschi Food Shops, a grocery and convenience store chain located in New England. Dick Tedeschi is her grandfather, and Nick Tedeschi is her grandfather. At the age of six, Tedeschi made her debut in front of the public performing as an understudy in a Broadway musical.
In 1993, Tedeschi, along with Tom Hambridge and Adrienne Hayes, established the band known as the Susan Tedeschi Band. In 1995, she took lessons from the guitarist Tim Gearan in Boston to learn how to play the blues guitar. Better Days was the name of the band’s album that was distributed to regional audiences in December of 1993. Recording sessions from 1997 were purchased by Richard Rosenblatt, and the band was signed to the independent label Tone-Cool Records shortly after. Recording contracts were tough to maintain; nonetheless, keeping together record contracts was challenging. The young guitarist Sean Costello was featured on the album Just Will not Burn, which was published in February 1998 to very positive reviews upon its initial release, notably from blues writers and media.
She had performed for her relatives when she was younger, and she had also listened to her father’s record collection, which included vintage vinyl recordings of musicians such as Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt. She was brought up as a Catholic, but she did not find much inspiration in the church choir. Instead, she attended mostly African-American Baptist churches because she felt the music there was “less repressed and more like a celebration of God.” She began playing in bands at the age of 13, and at the age of 18, she established her first group consisting entirely of original members. This group was called Smokin’ Section, and it was based in the nearby town of Scituate.
After some time, Tedeschi found herself performing as an opening act for artists such as John Mellencamp, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, The Allman Brothers Band, Taj Mahal, and Bob Dylan. It is unusual for a blues production to achieve the status of a gold record, which Just Will not Burn (1998) did in 2000 by selling 500,000 copies in the United States. She collaborated on two tracks for the album that was being released by Double Trouble alongside band members Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon.
On December 5, 2001, Tedeschi married Derek Trucks. They are the parents of two children: Charles Kahlil Trucks, who was born in March 2002 and was named after saxophonist Charlie Parker, guitarist Charlie Christian, and novelist Kahlil Gibran; their second kid is named Charlie Christian Trucks. Sophia Naima Trucks, who was born in 2004, got her middle name from the John Coltrane ballad that was written in honor of his first wife. They call the city of Jacksonville in Florida their home.
In 2003, she served as the opening act for The Rolling Stones and gained national exposure with her performances at large venues. The gig did not turn out to be monetarily lucrative, which came as a bit of a surprise.
On the PBS television program Austin City Limits in 2004, Tedeschi was featured alongside William Green on the Hammond organ, Jason Crosby on keyboards, violin, and vocals, Ron Perry on bass, and Jeff Sipe on drums.
In 2010, Tedeschi and Trucks announced that they would be taking a break from their respective solo bands in order to focus on their new ensemble, Tedeschi Trucks Band. The band has appeared at a variety of festivals, such as Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and the Fuji Rock Festival, amongst others. The Tedeschi Trucks Band, as opposed to Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi’s Soul Stew Revival, places an emphasis on writing and performing original material, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Additionally, the Tedeschi Trucks Band will serve as the primary focus of both Trucks and Tedeschi.
On May 7, 2021, it was revealed that Layla Revisited would be performed “Live at LOCKN.” This CD is a one-time live recording of Derek and the Dominos’ album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs performed in its entirety with Trey Anastasio, and it is the only recording of its kind. The album was released on July 16, 2021, despite having been recorded the previous year, on August 24, 2019, at the LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia.
