Who Is Susan Boyle
She was the feel-good story of 2009—a frumpy, middle-aged woman from a small Scottish town who blew Britain’s Got Talent judges Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden away with her powerful voice. But that was only the beginning. Soon, Susan Boyle’s audition video had gone viral and she was winning over fans and music charts all over the world.
Scottish singer Susan Boyle has a net worth of $40 million dollars, as of 2020.
Small Town Beginnings
Susan was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland to father Patrick, a miner, and mother Bridget, a shorthand typist. Things were busy in the Boyle household—Susan had seven brothers and sisters and things were not easy for the young girl, who at birth suffered brain damage that caused learning disabilities throughout her childhood.
Susan’s learning disabilities weren’t the only hard part of school; she was the victim of countless school bullies and later remarked that the constant ridicule from her classmates made her feel unloved. But Susan found a release from her tough school life when she began involving herself in school plays. But her involvement in the theater didn’t become fully realized until after her school days. Before that, she was forced to indulge her musical side as a spectator, attending performances of classic shows like Les Miserables.
In 1995, Susan attended her first professional audition for a U.K. talent show called My Kind of People to no avail. But the audition renewed Susan’s desire to perform and she began participating in local karaoke nights and singing at her church. But in 1997 after her father passed away, Susan was forced to take care of her sickly mother and put her singing aspirations on hold. But Susan’s mother didn’t want her daughter to give up on her dream. She began making demo tapes before another tragedy rocked the family when her sister Kathleen died from an asthma attack in 2000.
Two years later, Susan got serious about her craft and began taking singing lessons and her name began to circulate in her small town after performances at local venues. In 2007, her mother passed away and sent Susan into a bout of depression and seclusion.
Susan’s Got Talent
But one year later, with her mother’s wish for her to pursue her talent in the back of her mind, Susan auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent with the song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from the show that inspired her to sing, Les Miserables. She soon became a show favorite and a YouTube sensation.
But with a huge following of supporters also came haters that would frequently push Susan to her limits and force her to contemplate quitting the show. Although Susan did not win the competition, she went on to tour with Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 and released her first album, I Dreamed a Dream, later that year. Her album rivaled the likes of the chart-topping Taylor Swift and musical legend Michael Jackson and became the bestselling album of 2010. She released her Christmas album, The Gift, which reached similar sky-high record sales in December 2010.
She was the dark horse that could. This ugly duckling turned confident swan is the dream turned reality story that keeps aspiring performers everywhere constantly honing their craft.
