From 1981 to 1983, Van Gundy served as an assistant coach at the University of Vermont, where he began his coaching career. He then spent three seasons (1983–1986) as the head coach at Castleton State College in Vermont.
Van Gundy had great success at Castleton State, and the NAIA honored him the District 5 Coach of the Year following his first season in charge. Castleton finished the 1984–85 season as the top team in the NAIA Mayflower Conference, and under his leadership, the club went on to win the NAIA District 5 tournament.
In 1986, he would depart Castleton and spend a season working as an assistant coach at both Canisius College and Fordham University.
Van Gundy would take on the role of head coach once more in 1988, this time at the University of Lowell. He would play there for four seasons, with a 54–60 record.
At that point, he would become an assistant coach on Stu Jackson’s staff at the University of Wisconsin. When Jackson left Wisconsin in 1994, the Badgers elevated Gundy to head coach. Despite having a large number of highly regarded recruits, the team struggled. Van Gundy would lose his job following a 13–14 season.

Van Gundy would receive his big break after serving as Pat Riley’s assistant coach for 12 years. Riley would continue to serve as the team’s president but step down as head coach. After being promoted, Van Gundy took over a club that had only won 25 games the season before.
Van Gundy led the Heat to a 42-win season in his first year in charge, and much to the astonishment of his detractors, they made it all the way to the second round of the 2004 NBA Playoffs.
Riley’s deal for Shaquille O’Neal during the offseason was a stroke of luck for Van Gundy. Miami would finish the season with 59 wins, the greatest record in the Eastern Conference, with O’Neal and Wade starting. Additionally, Van Gundy would become the first Heat coach to serve as an All-Star Game coach.
The Detroit Pistons eventually defeated the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. Although injuries contributed to their loss, there were whispers that Pat Riley and the players didn’t want Van Gundy to continue managing from the sidelines. In any case, Riley would take over as the team’s head coach after Van Gundy succumbed to the pressure and resigned.

Orlando Magic
Van Gundy eventually returned to the hardwood as the head coach of the Orlando Magic in 2007 after taking a break from coaching. He led the team to a 52-win season in his first year there, taking them all the way to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
