You first met him as Heidi Montag‘s obnoxious boyfriend-turned-husband on The Hills. Now he’s just obnoxious in general to anyone who’ll give him the time of day.
Who Is Spencer Pratt
Best known for being one half of “Speidi,” reality television star Spencer Pratt has a seemingly insatiable hunger for fame. He and Heidi Montag—the other half of the Speidi equation—have managed to outrage and, occasionally, amuse puzzled onlookers who have tried to discern which of the couple’s stunts are real and which are just one of their frequent grabs for attention.
American television personality Spencer Pratt has a net worth of just $100 thousand dollars, as of 2020. He and Heidi Montag blew through over $10 million dollars and ended up “almost broke”.
The Prince Of Malibu
Pratt was born on August 14, 1983 in Los Angeles, California and attended Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica. His first brush with fame came when he appeared on the short-lived reality show The Princes of Malibu, which was meant to be a vehicle of stardom for gadabouts Brody and Brandon Jenner, the sons of 1976 Olympic decathlon gold medal winner Bruce Jenner. Pratt, who was friends and classmates with Brody, appeared in the 2005 series as himself and was also listed as the show’s creator and executive producer. The Princes of Malibu aired only twice before being canceled.
Pratt next appeared on MTV’s The Hills, which was a spin-off of its popular Laguna Beach series. The Hills, which premiered in 2006, was a reality show that showcased Lauren Conrad and her friends, including Pratt’s future wife, Montag, as they worked, played and generally tried to figure out their post-high school lives in Los Angeles.
King Of The Hill
Although MTV called The Hills a reality show, television critics often accused it of being more staged than real and that parts of the show were scripted. Former cast member Kelly Cutrone denied that the show was scripted—although the show’s creator, Adam DiVello, did admit that at least one segment of the show’s finale was staged.
Pratt became a regular on the series during The Hills’ second season when he began dating Montag. At first, he came across to viewersas a spoiled rich kid and womanizer who loved to party, but after he started dating Montag, he became more known for his strange obsessive, controlling behavior with her.
When Montag eventually left Pratt to take an out-of-town job, he went after her to try and woo her back. Eventually he was successful and the two have been an on-again, off-again couple ever since. Friends of the couple have criticized Pratt for alienating Montag from her family and friends and for being the reason that Montag underwent 10 plastic surgery operations, all in one marathon session, at the age of 23.
From Camera Man To Author
In 2008, in what was either a really bad idea or another publicity stunt, Montag and Pratt shot a music video for her song ‘Higher’ that featured a bikini-clad Montag running around on a beach. The video, which the couple claimed they shot in 30 minutes, was roundly panned.
Pratt and Montag next appeared on another reality show, 2009’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, along with other C-listers such as American Idol castoff Sanjaya Malakar and Patti Blagojevich, the wife of the disgraced former Illinois governor Rod. Speidi—as they were labeled by then—was quick to alienate the rest of the cast members with their erratic, over-the-top behavior. That same year, the couple also released a book, How to Be Famous: Our Guide to Looking the Part, Playing the Press, and Becoming a Tabloid Fixture.
The Ultimate Stunt Man
Pratt and Montag have reportedly been wed twice, once in Mexico on November 20, 2008 and again on April 25, 2009 in the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, California. Two of their co-stars on The Hills, Pratt’s sister Stephanie and Montag’s sister Holly, were bridesmaids in the Pasadena wedding. The Mexican wedding was never considered legal, unattended by any family members or friends, and denounced by many gossip columnists and magazines as a publicity stunt for the reality show.
In the summer of 2010, the two claimed they were separating and that their divorce would be finalized on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, 2011. Once again gossip columnists and the general public smelled a publicity stunt and refused to give the report much credence. On October 1, 2010, the couple announced that they were staying together.
Whether breaking up, making up, prancing around the beach with his half-naked wife or referring to himself in the third person, Spencer Pratt always has a way of keeping himself in the public eye. We can only wait and see what he’ll do next to piss everyone off and make sure they’re looking at him.
Defining Quote “I’m thinking about ideas people might think are crazy, and I’m like, This world is crazy, where do you think we are? You want to tell me there’s a planet, and there’s a universe and gravity holding us down? It’s like, okay, I’m crazy then.”
