About Slim Thug
Slim Thug is the stage name of Steve Jerome Thomas. He is a Houston-based rapper, songwriter, and record producer that gained international popularity for his contribution to the rapper Mike Jones’s chart-topping hit single “Still Trippin”. Slim Thug began his career in the late 1990s and quickly gained mainstream attention. Throughout his career, which spans over three decades, he has released 11 studio albums, 17 mixtapes, and 2 extended plays. His debut studio album “Already Platinum” remains his most triumphant project.
How Did Slim Thug Get So Rich?
The rapper became rich right after he left the major label and formed his own – “Boss Hogg Outlawz”. To support himself and his label, he also bought two record stores and worked several months in the real estate business. In the first year of the new millennium, he released his very first studio project – the mixtape “I Represent This”. Concurrently with that, he also had guest appearances on five different songs from fellow rappers such as E.S.G., Madd Hatta, and Candyman.
Throughout the early 2000s, Thug continuously released new mixtapes and collaborated with established names in the hip hop industry, thanks to which he earned over $80,000. Before he began releasing his solo studio albums in 2005, he released several collaborative albums with the likes of E.S.G, Lil Keke, and the Boss Hogg Outlawz. The latter is a hip hop collective that he formed and led for more than 10 years, thanks to which he accumulated more than $300,000. The group included artists that he signed to his label and from 2004 to 2011, they released four well-received studio albums.
Why is he so famous?
Slim Thug became famous after he associated himself with singers Mike Jones, T.I, Pharrell, Chamillionaire, and many others. He was born on September 8, 1980, in Houston, Texas. Raised in the Northside neighborhood Scenic Woods, he became interested in rapping at a very young age. At the time he was still attending the Eisenhower High School, he began creating his own songs. At the age of 17, he was already performing freestyle raps in parties at both his and other local high schools.
In the late 1990s, he caught the attention of Michael Watts (DJ 5000) and OG Ron C who offered him a record deal with the label “Swishahouse”. Signing with the label in his early twenties contributed a lot to the success of the then-aspiring rapper. His first appearances in rap singles came in 1999. He took part in Rapsta and E-Rock’s song “Make That Money” and E.S.G’s “Braids and Fades”. Also, that year, after he realized how much money he could receive for distributing his own mixtapes, he announced his departure from Swishahouse.
What Makes Him So Successful?
The success of this hip hop sensation comes from his work as a solo artist and his collaborations. Another thing that elevated his career just before he released his album and was finding his groove was his association with Mike Jones. In 2004, Jones released his chart-topping hit “Still Trippin”, which includes the contribution of Slim Thug. The song gained mainstream recognition and several awards and that helped the rapper become even more popular. In 2005, he signed a record deal with the labels Star Trek and Geffen.
In the summer of that year, he released his long-anticipated debut studio album called “Already Platinum”. The album entered two US Billboard charts, including the Billboard 200, at number two and after selling over 500,000 copies, it received a gold certification. Even to this day, this project remains his best and most achieved studio album. Throughout the next few years, he released ten more albums. Although they weren’t as commercially and critically acclaimed as his first, they still helped him establish himself as one of the top names in the hip hop world.
Slim Thug is one of the wealthiest rappers that emerged from the 1990s. Because of his mixtapes, solo and collaborative albums, he became a millionaire whose net worth exceeds $3 million. Even now, he continues to actively pursue his rapping career, with his most recent projects being his collaborative albums with Killa Kyleon. Besides Kyleon, he also has many other successful collaborations with established artists like Beyonce, Fabolous, Kanye West, The Game, and Trina.
