Carwin was a standout wrestler and football player in high school, but major college programs passed him up maybe due to his height (171 pound weight class) and ambition to play both sports in college. This brought him to the tiny Western State College, where he played football and was named to the All-American team twice. Unfortunately, the surgery he needed to treat three bulging discs and one ruptured disc from his senior season cost him a position in the NFL draft.
He returned to college for his final year of wrestling eligibility as a result of his disappointment, which may have turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Prior to his football failures, Carwin was a two-time NCAA Division II heavyweight runner-up in wrestling. He did, however, succeed in winning the NCAA Division II national heavyweight championship when he returned for his last season.
The majority of professional MMA fighters only fight for a living. Carwin, who holds a mechanical engineering degree from the Colorado School of Mines and a bachelor’s degree in environmental technology from Western State College, still works as an engineer.
After Ron Waterman, the high school wrestling coach, invited Carwin to assist in his bout preparation, Carwin developed an interest in fighting. This eventually resulted in him stopping Carlton Jones on October 14, 2005, after someone dropped off the WEC program that Waterman was competing on. He did this via submission due to strikes. Soon after, Carwin started working out with Nate Marquardt in Denver.
Camden is a son from a former marriage of Carwin, who is married to Lani. Currently expecting their first child together, he and Lani are expecting.
