About Scotty McCreery
At the age of just 17 years old, Scotty McCreery won the tenth season of American Idol in 2011. The country crooner followed his win with the release of his debut album Clear as Day just months later to record numbers for an Idol winner. Following the likes of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, McCreery is emerging as a successful country artist. Scott was always musical in his youth, learning to sing and play the guitar at an early age. In elementary school he worked on his vocals as much as his schoolwork and soon after began winning North Carolina competitions and appearing at festivals and booking small venues.
McCreery won a singing contest in the town of Clayton and at 16 years old, tried out for American Idol. He chose the song “Your Man,” and was compared by judges to Randy Travis with his country twang and deep baritone vocals. He was accepted into the series along with a close friend of his Lauren Alaina. While McCreery took first place, Alaina took second and both became audience favorites.
The country ballad that sold nearly 175,000 copies during its first week of release, “I Love You This Big” was McCreery’s coronation song and it hit number 32 in the Billboard country charts. That made it the highest-charting debut single in country music history and the release of Clear as Day appeared in the fall of 2011, the album dubbed as number 1. The album became one of the better-selling albums stemming from the show, it was certified Platinum by the RIAA having sold 1.2 million records in the US alone. It also produced the hit single in “The Trouble with Girls.”
In 2012, McCreery released his second studio album, Christmas with Scotty McCreery in time for the holiday season. It was soon after certified Gold by the RIAA and sold a total of 382,000 copies in the US. A year after the release of his second album, McCreery released his third studio album See You Tonight. The album signified a transition into bright contemporary country-pop and debuted as number 1 Billboard’s Country Albums chart, as well as won McCreery the “Breakthrough Artist Award” at the 2013 American Country Awards. While musically things seemed to be on the up and up, sales were dampening however, with just 270,000 copies sold in the US.
For his next album, Seasons Change, eventually released in 2018, McCreery had signed with Triple Tigers the previous year, and was distributed by Sony Nashville. While the album secured him three number 1 hits Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, sales figures were still low. In total, 97,800 copies have been sold in the US. He later released “You Time,” in 2020, a single that reached number 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay, and timed the release of his latest album, Same Truck, in 2021.
