About Sasha Banks
Currently under contract with WWE, she goes by the ring name Sasha Banks and performs on the SmackDown brand. She is the daughter of Reo and Judith Varnado, was born in Fairfield, California. Her father was African-American, while her mother is of German origin. Her family relocated to several locations, including Minnesota, in order to find Joshua, her autistic brother, medical facilities and schools. They made Boston their home, where she started her career as a professional wrestler. She attended online classes and was a lifelong fan of All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling (AJW).
Prior to this, Banks competed in independent wrestling, most notably for Chaotic Wrestling, where she won the women’s championship. She joined WWE in 2012 and was given the NXT brand as her home. In 2015, she received a promotion to the WWE main roster. Her match with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: Respect in October 2015 was the first iron woman match in WWE history, the longest women’s match in WWE history at the time, and the first women’s match to ever headline an NXT TakeOver. The match lasted 30 minutes. Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) selected their match as the best of the year, and Banks was named the best female wrestler.
The Raw Women’s Championship was eventually held five times by Banks. She and Charlotte Flair made history in 2016 by becoming the first women to host a WWE pay-per-view event, the first female competitors in a Hell in a Cell match, and the first female winners of the PWI Feud of the Year award. At the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view in 2019, she and her old tag team teammate, Bayley, won the first WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
She received the Sports Illustrated Wrestler of the Year award that year. The first black women to co-headline a WrestleMania were Banks and her rival Bianca Belair at WrestleMania 37. In 2021, she was the third female athlete that received the most tweets.
