Sammy Kershaw, whose full name is Samuel Paul Kershaw, is an American country music singer and songwriter. His career started in the 1970s and since then, he has released more than 16 studio albums, most of which earned multiple gold and platinum certifications. He has also released 40 singles that have entered the Top 40 US Billboard Country Chart, and, to this day, his biggest hit remains “She Don’t Know That She’s Beautiful”.
Sammy Kershaw is famous for his different and distinguished country music projects. He was born on February 24, 1958, in Kaplan, Louisiana. He’s the third cousin of Doug and Rusty Kershaw, fellow singers and songwriters.
His passion for music started in his pre-adolescent years and by the age of 11, he was already playing guitar. The following year, he began playing in various beer joints and honky-tonks, and, when he was 14, he met his lifelong idol – George Jones.
During his teens, he began singing and eventually served as an opening act for the likes of George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price. At the same time, he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, something that he struggled with until he turned 30 in 1988. He then quit his bad habits and, after taking a short break from the music work, Kershaw returned in the late 1980s and never looked back.
What makes Samuel Kershaw are not just his many number one albums and hits but also his association with famous record labels and artists. In the 1990s, he impressed PolyGram and Mercury Records with his demonstration tapes and soon, he was offered recording deals.
On October 1 1991, Sammy released his very first song – “Cadillac Style”, which peaked at number three on the Canadian chart “Country Tracks” and the US Billboard chart “Hot Country Songs”. A week later, he released his debut studio album titled Don’t Go Near the Water.
The first album of Kershaw was met with positive reviews and, apart from entering several charts in Canada and the United States, it also earned several a few gold and platinum certifications. Throughout the next decade, he continuously released seven more studio albums, including Haunted Heart, and Feeling Good Train. One of the albums from that time is his fifth – Labor of Love, which to this day remains his most successful project. The gold and platinum-certified studio album excelled in American and Canadian music charts.
Since the late 2000s, Sammy Kershaw also became interested in politics. In June 2007, he was announced as a candidate for the lieutenant governor of Louisiana. By October, it was announced that he had finished second with 30 percent of the vote.
In 2010, concurrently with working as a spokesperson for the non-profit Louisiana-based organization Protect Our Coastline, the aspiring politician announced he would once again try to become the lieutenant governor of the state. He failed to win the elections and finished third overall. Since then, he has primarily focused on his music and has toured the world with his band and other artists such as Joe Diffie, Collin Raye, Aaron Tippin, Darryl Worley, and Pam Tillis.
Releasing the first and a few other studio albums in the 1990s marked the beginning of a very successful career for the country artist. By the 2000s, he signed with various labels – RCA Nashville, Auidum, Category 5, and Koch Records.
In 2001, he also released his first collaborative album with his then-wife Lorrie Morgan- I Finally Found Someone. Since then, he released seven more albums with successful being I Want My Money Back and Honky Tonk Boots. His most recent album is The Blues Got Me from 2016, and since then, he has been working on his seventeenth album.
