About RZA
Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, who is known professionally as RZA, is an American actor, author, director, filmmaker, musician, rapper, and record producer. He gained popularity in the early 1990s, after forming the Wu-Tang Clan, to which he became the leader and producer of almost all of the hip hop collective’s albums. As a musician, he has created four studio albums and has three collaboration albums, two with Gravediggas and one with Banks & Steelz.
The multi-talented RZA quickly became one of the most popular filmmakers and directors in the early 21st century. Among some of the classics that he has been heavily involved in are Kill Bill: Volume 1, Kill Bill: Volume 2, The Man with the Iron Fists, American Gangster and Brick Mansions.
RZA is famous because he’s the leader and producer of one of the most influential hip hop collectives – Wu-Tang Clan. He was born on July 5, 1969, in Brownsville, Brooklyn. He was introduced to the hip hop genre when he was 9 years old and this is when he realized he wants to become a musician. By the age of eleven, he was competing in various rap battles in New York. Before he began working, during his teenage years, RZA was involved in multiple crimes such as drug-dealing and petty crimes. More seriously, RZA was charged with attempted murder while in Steubenville. Fortunately he was acquitted of the charge, giving him what he has called a “second chance”, according to Oxygen.
Robert first began doing music in 1984 when he formed a rap group with his cousins Gary Grice (known then as “Allah Justice”) and Russel Jones (known then as “Ol’ specialist”). During their time together as “Force of the Imperial Master” / “All in Together Now”, they signed a recording deal with Jamaica Records and released several singles.
Towards the 1990s, the trio disbanded their group and began pursuing their solo careers in the hip hop industry. Soon, he was signed to a deal by Tommy Boy Records with which he released his original version of the EP Ooh I Love You Rakeem.
The skilled rapper started to become rich as soon as he formed the Wu-Tang Clan collective in 1992. Their first single was released in December – “Protect Ya Neck”. Simultaneously with producing some of the group’s best and creating new music, RZA managed to release four successful studio albums. His debut album titled Bobby Digital in Stereo was released in November 1998, and in just a month’s time, it sold 500,000 copies because of which it received a gold certification by the RIAA.
His other albums – Digital Bullet, Birth of a Prince, and Digi Snacks were all met with positive reviews and had commercial success.
RZA’s first production in which he worked as both a lead actor, director, and co-writer was the 2012 martial arts film The Man with the Iron Fists. He also worked as a lead actor and co-writer for the film sequel, released in 2015.
Towards the late 2010s, he began working proactively as a composer, director, producer, and writer for productions such as Love Beats Rhymes, Thriller, and Cut Throat City among many others. Apart from films, television series, and even video games, RZA also managed to write his own books. As an author, he wrote two books – The Wu-Tang Manual and The Tao of Wu.
