Beginnings of MMA

Most MMA competitors begin their careers in a particular branch of martial arts, so to speak. Consequently, Lyoto Machida’s early training was in Shotokan Karate, George St. Pierre’s early training was in Kyokushin Karate, and Chael Sonnen’s early training was in wrestling. But when he was a teenager, MacDonald began training in MMA with David Lea at the Toshida Fighting Arts Academy in Kelowna, Canada.

At the youthful age of sixteen, MacDonald made his professional MMA debut, defeating Terry Thiara at Extreme Fighting Challenge 4 with a rear naked choke. Before joining the UFC, he actually started his career 9-0, winning a contest over the esteemed Jordan Mein.

Beginnings of UFC

In his UFC debut on January 11, 2010, MacDonald defeated MMA veteran Mike Guymon by first-round armbar. Then, on June 12, 2010, at UFC 115, he lost his debut MMA match to Carlos Condit via third-round TKO. Prior to the last round, which amounted to a contentious stoppage, MacDonald had been well ahead in the fight.

Combative Style

A true mixed martial artist, MacDonald. He has superior wrestling skills, technical hitting, and submissions. He is a large, strong welterweight as well. He is therefore as dangerous as they come because you never really know what he would employ to defeat you.

Thus, it would probably be appropriate to describe his fighting style as varied and/or well-rounded.

Some of Rory MacDonald’s most notable MMA triumphs:

At the UFC on FOX event featuring Henderson vs. Diaz on December 8, 2012, MacDonald wins by unanimous decision over BJ Penn. We cannot deny the legend that is BJ Penn. Thus, MacDonald showed the world that he was a legitimate force to be reckoned with by easily defeating him with his striking in this fight—I mean, he injured Penn on numerous occasions. In fact, the Canadian won the first round on live national television against a fighter who was widely regarded as one of the best first-round fighters in MMA history.

On April 30, 2011, MacDonald defeated Nate Diaz in a unanimous decision at UFC 129: Diaz was routinely placed on his back by MacDonald in this match, as he consistently outplayed Diaz in all facets of the game. It’s unusual to see a Diaz get outclassed in this way. In fact, Diaz was forced to return to the lightweight class as a result of this defeat.

On January 22, 2010, MacDonald defeats Mike Guymon via armbar at UFC Fight Night 20: Many people have anxiety before making their UFC debut. It is clear from MacDonald’s armbar victory in the opening round that he did not.

Jordan Mein is defeated by MacDonald at Rumble in the Cage 17 on June 17, 2006, using a rear naked choke: Mein is an exceptional fighter. An excellent addition to MacDonald’s early résumé.
