Rock guitarist Mick Taylor
The Stones had a series of lead guitarists throughout the course of their career, but Keith Richards’ songwriting and unique rhythm guitar playing created the musical foundation for the group. Mick Taylor, who joined the band in 1969 at the age of 20 when Brian Jones quit, was possibly the most talented of the bunch. During his time with the Stones, Taylor was the king of the solo. On songs like “Sister Morphine,” “Rip This Joint,” and, of course, the protracted jam session at the conclusion of “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking?” he actually became well-known for the wailing sounds that emanated from this guitar.

Taylor departed the band in 1974, and the Stones hired Ron Wood, a former member of Faces, to take Taylor’s place in 1975. Wood was regarded as a maestro of the slide guitar, and you can hear his slide technique on songs by the Rolling Stones like “Far Away Eyes” and “Some Girls,” to name a couple. The Rolling Stones’ sound has developed with and contributed to the direction of popular music throughout the years, led by the guitar work of Keith Richards and supported by a variety of complementary guitarists over the years.
