Who Is Regis Philbin

Regis Philbin was famous for decades of work as a talk show host, game show host and TV presenter. His long illustrious career in front of the camera made him one of America’s most beloved and enduring cultural icons. He died at the age of 88 on July 24, 2020.

At the time of his death in 2020, American actor Regis Philbin had a net worth of $150 million dollars.

Host With The Most

Born into an Irish Catholic family in 1931, Philbin was raised in the South Bronx. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, he served two years in the U.S. Navy before heading west to tackle a career in broadcasting. Working his way up in Hollywood, Regis took on several jobs writing, reporting and anchoring in television and radio before settling into a hosting seat on his first talk show, The Regis Philbin Show. The show’s budget couldn’t afford writers, allowing Philbin to cultivate his characteristic style of easygoing chitchat that would be recognized, years later, as his trademark.

Ambition paid off in 1967 as Philbin achieved nationwide recognition after joining Joey Bishop’s eponymous late night talk show as a sidekick, although the high-profile show was short-lived and ended in 1969. Philbin bounced around the country hosting a number of local shows, including A.M. Los Angeles, which he stuck with for seven years. In 1983, Philbin moved back to New York where he joined his former co-host Cindy Garvey on The Morning Show. And there he would stay for 28 years.

Going Into Syndication

Philbin’s presence on the show helped boost its popularity, but it was not until 1985 when Kathie Lee Gifford replaced Garvey that the ratings soared. The show was introduced with a new name Live with Regis and Kathie Lee for its nationally syndicated debut in 1988 and the duo charmed millions of morning fans with their onscreen chemistry. When Gifford left in 2000, Philbin maintained the show’s sky-high ratings, even before soap opera star Kelly Ripa was assigned as his permanent co-host. Having seen the show through seven Emmy nominations, Philbin proved to be an irreplaceable personality.

Making Millionaires

In 1999, Philbin broadened his viewership when he took on the primetime hosting duties of the hit game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The game show experienced overnight success, making Philbin a round-the-clock sensation for many years. He is also accredited for popularizing the catchphrase, “Is that your final answer?”

Aside from his regular commitments, Philbin had a knack for popping up all over television, hosting anything from Miss America pageants to New Year’s Eve broadcasts. His ubiquitous presence on television eventually won him a spot in the Guinness World’s Records as the new record holder for Most Hours on Camera, which he continues to break with each show he does. In January 2011, Philbin announced his retirement from Live With Regis and Kelly, though he had no interest in leaving the industry altogether.

Off Camera

Despite his tremendous on-air energy, Philbin’s health suffered occasional scares. He underwent a number of serious medical procedures, such as angioplasty, triple bypass surgery and hip replacement surgery. Philbin ha been married twice and had four children. He had been married to his second wife, Joy Philbin, since 1970.

Regis Philbin was a fixture of American entertainment for nearly five decades. He charmed a nation with his naturally affable demeanor, setting a standard for those to follow in his footsteps and ensuring his place in television history.
