Philbin, who was born in 1931 into an Irish Catholic family, was raised in the South Bronx. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years following his graduation from the University of Notre Dame before moving to the West to pursue a career in radio.
Before settling into a hosting position on his first talk show, The Regis Philbin Show, Regis worked his way up in Hollywood, taking on a number of writing, reporting, and anchoring positions in television and radio. The lack of writers on the show’s budget allowed Philbin to develop his distinctive relaxed banter that would later become known as his trademark.
Ambition paid off in 1967 when Philbin became well-known across the country after appearing as a sidekick on Joey Bishop’s eponymous late-night talk show. However, the high-profile program was short-lived and dissolved in 1969. Philbin traveled the nation hosting a variety of regional programs, including A.M. Los Angeles, where he stayed for seven years.
Back in New York in 1983, Philbin joined Cindy Garvey, his old co-host, on The Morning Show. And he would remain there for 28 years.
Entering the syndicate
Philbin’s participation of the program contributed to its increase in popularity, but the ratings didn’t really take off until Kathie Lee Gifford took Garvey’s place in 1985. For its nationally syndicated premiere in 1988, the program was rebranded as Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, and the couple’s on-screen chemistry won over millions of morning viewers.
Even before Kelly Ripa, the star of the soap series General Hospital, was tapped to serve as his permanent co-host, Philbin kept the show’s record-breaking ratings after Gifford left in 2000.
After seven Emmy nominations for the program, Philbin established his value as a unique personality.

When Philbin accepted the primetime hosting position of the popular game program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 1999, he increased his audience.
Due to the game show’s unexpected popularity, Philbin became a 24-hour celebrity for many years. He is also credited for making the expression “Is that your final answer” popular.
In addition to his usual obligations, Philbin had a talent for unexpectedly appearing on television to host everything from Miss America pageants to New Year’s Eve programs. He finally earned a spot in the Guinness World Records as the new record holder for Most Hours on Camera, which he continues to shatter with each show he does, thanks to his constant presence on television.
Philbin announced his resignation from Live With Regis and Kelly in January 2011, although he had no intention of leaving the entertainment business completely.

Numerous significant medical treatments, including angioplasty, triple bypass surgery, and hip replacement surgery, were performed on him. Philbin has four kids and had remarried twice. Since 1970, he had been wed to Joy Philbin, his second wife.
Regis Philbin passed away from a heart attach on July 24, 2020, at a Greenwich, Connecticut, hospital. Age-wise, he was 88.
