Born in Fort Myers, Florida, Washington Algemod Lenier Washington “Plies” dropped out of college to start his career as a rapper with the support of his step brother, Ronnell Lawrence Lavatte “Big Gates”. Together they founded an independent record label, Big Gates Records. They released the track “Tell Dem Krackers Dat” and soon after traveled to Miami on a few seperate trips to promote it. This activity resulted in a deal for Plies on Slip-n-Slide Record.
Plies released four studio albums from 2007 until 2010 with Slip-n-Slide Records. His debut album, The Real Testament, included the song “Shawty”. A runaway success, featuring T-Pain. His other successful track from that album was Hypnotized, featuring Akon. In 2008, Plies released two albums. The first one Definition of Real was released in June and the second one Da REAList, was released in December.
In 2010 he released Goon Affiliated.
Plies together with his step brother took a more professional approach right from the start. By the time 2008 came around, he was already set to release another two album. Not bad for an artist who had just started his recording career the previous year. By the end of 2008, Plies had released the two albums Definition of Real and Da REAList. In 2010, Plies released yet another album called Goon Affiliated.
Plies’ fame has been amplified because he has been able to successfully produce and release a lot of tracks. Many other young artists have not had his kind of ability to hustle like that and it’s paid off. Plies has become famous faster than almost any other rapper.
One of the main reasons why Plies has managed to get so rich is his phenomenal power of achievement. He launched himself into the rap industry faster than just about anyone else in history and after being signed, he released four studio albums in three years. Perhaps it was his years on the field and in training that taught him to be so together with his life and work.
Plies is also savvy to new technology and has leveraged downloadable tracks before many of his contemporaries. Plies released his first mixtape back in 2010 titled You Need People Like Me. Since then he has focused on mixtapes while becoming an established performance artist.

Social media is an important part of the Plies success story. Since the start of his career, he has amassed a considerable number of Twitter followers. Fans love his comedic approach to life and funny take on many of the problems we come across in our lives.
More than anything, it is Plies persona that has contributed to his success. During his career, Plies has received and been nominated for several awards. Notably, he won the Best Rap and and R& B collection at the Ozone awards back in 2007.
The following year, 2008, he won Best Rap Album at the same awards. In 2011, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance for “Lose My Mind” with Young Jeezy.
Out of all of the American rap artists, he certainly seems to be the one who works the hardest. At the same time, it has to be pointed out that he knows how to work smart. This has contributed to his success and wealth.
He also appears on a number of podcasts and takes some interviews which has helped his audiences relate to him on a person to person level, and not just in his music.
Plies has shown that not all rappers come from the hood. Artists are beginning to emerge from all different social economic backgrounds and with good lyrics and delivery, too.
No longer can artists stick to a specific genre or one activity. Social media matters and can enhance almost any artist’s career. Plies has shown how you can have a positive influence on your fan base when you use social media in the right way.
Yes, Plies has had a few personal mishaps with the police which include possession of a concealed weapon, according to Tampa Bay Times, and driving under the influence, according to TMZ. As we all know, none of us are perfect and we just have to do the best that we can. In any case he has not been violent and many consider that his run-ins with the law, have only earned him more recognition.
