Who Is Piers Morgan
Although this acid-tongued Brit has made a career for being judgmental, Piers took on the new role of interviewer in January of 2011 when he occupied the vacant seat behind Larry King’s desk. It’s a far cry from his beginnings as a gossip rag editor.
English broadcaster Piers Morgan has a net worth of $20 million dollars, as of 2020.
The Muckraking Man
Piers was born in East Sussex, England to a father, who died when he was only one year old, and an artist mother who later remarried to Glynne Pughe-Morgan, a meat distribution company owner who raised Piers along with his older brother, Jeremy. Money was tight for the family during Piers’s childhood but the boys’ schooling was not sacrificed due to their economic situation. Piers went through the Catholic school system before heading to Harlow College to study journalism.
Pen in hand, the budding newspaperman got his start at local media outlets before kicking his career off at The Sun where he had a heavy hand in the paper’s business column. Proving his prowess at The Sun, Piers was then appointed by media king Rupert Murdoch to edit News of the World—the position landed him more than just a stellar job title, it landed the then-28-year-old the title of youngest appointed editor in more than 50 years. At News of the World Piers developed a reputation for being ruthless when it came to celebrity reporting. But Piers’s hard-handed take on the celebrity world at News of the World only lasted a bit over a year before he ditched the publication to become the editor of another tabloid, The Daily Mirror.
But the celebrities he reported on weren’t the only ones who had to cover their tracks, in 2000 the slippery editor was accused of buying a large sum of shares in a computer company before promoting and encouraging readers to buy shares in the same company in The Daily Mirror’s business column. Although some of his writers took the heat, Piers was not charged with any foul play in the snafu.
Four years later, with the print media world on a downward spiral, Piers was fired after he approved the publication of photos that showed British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners—it turned out that the photos were fakes. With a major career slip-up under his belt, Piers turned to England’s children when he launched First News, which was aimed at pre and early teens.
But the written word wasn’t enough for Piers, he went on to create a TV documentary series, The Importance of Being Famous, before taking his celebrity knowledge across the pond as a judge on America’s Got Talent. The tough to please judge then went on to try and impress Mr. Trump when he appeared as a contestant (and eventual winner) on The Celebrity Apprentice and put contestants through the ringer as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
Late Night’s New King
But forget mouthing off on talent show judging panels—Piers took a role as a listener when he was appointed a seat at CNN, occupying the throne of retiring late night king, Larry King. Piers Morgan Tonight debuted in mid-January of 2011.
A pioneer of celebrity journalism, Piers delivers the ugly truth unapologetically and that’s exactly the reason why we always tune in. But we’re holding our breath. He’s got some big shoes to fill and whether he can get guests to open up the way they did to King remains to be seen.
Defining Quote “I’m not just going to be another man sitting in the CNN studio wearing red braces.”
