About Phoebe Cates

Phoebe Belle Cates Kline, an American former actress is best remembered for her work in the movies Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Gremlins (1984), and Drop Dead Fred (1991).

Cates was born to a family of professionals in the television and Broadway production industries on July 16, 1963, in New York City. She is the daughter of Lily and Joseph Cates, who helped conceive The $64,000 Question and was a significant Broadway producer as well as a pioneer in television (originally known as Joseph Katz).

Phoebe Cates has an estimated net worth of $43 million dollars, as of 2023. Cates attended both the Juilliard School and the Professional Children’s School.

Gilbert Cates, her uncle, created multiple television specials, frequently in collaboration with Cates’s father, as well as a number of annual Academy Awards shows. Cates is Eurasian; her father, maternal grandmother, and maternal grandfather are all of Russian Jewish ancestry, while her maternal grandpa is of Chinese-Filipino ancestry. The mother of Cates was a Shanghai, China native.

Cates began modelling at the age of ten, and she has since appeared in Seventeen and other teen-targeted publications. She later decided she wanted to pursue a career as a dancer. She eventually won a scholarship to the School of American Ballet, but she left at age 14 due to a knee injury. She then started a brief but fruitful career as a model. Cates declared that she didn’t enjoy the business: “Again and over, it was exactly the same thing. I eventually started doing it just for the money.”

Cates worked as a teen model and made four covers for Seventeen. The first was published in April 1979. Later, she made another three covers for Seventeen, and in 1979 and 1980, she frequently made editorial pages inside the magazine.

Cates decided to pursue acting after becoming dissatisfied with modelling. After a New York screen test, she was given her first role in the 1982 film Paradise. Although her father persuaded her to accept the position, she was hesitant to perform the nudity the part required.

Cates made her feature debut with Paradise. From March to May 1981, Israel was the location for the filming. While still a child, she appeared in multiple full-frontal and back naked sequences in the movie (age 17).

Cates co-starred with her husband Kevin Kline in the fact-based comedy-drama Princess Caraboo (1994), which was released in 1994. This was Cates’ final movie before she ostensibly shifted her attention from acting to taking care of her children, Owen and Greta.

The highest-grossing movie of her career, Gremlins (1984), co-starred Cates in the summer of 1984. It was produced by Steven Spielberg. She would return to the role of Kate Beringer in the follow-up Gremlins 2: The New Batch six years later (1990).

Cates made her stage debut in June 1984 at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in the Off-Broadway comedy The Nest of the Wood Grouse by Soviet author Viktor Rozov.

Cates claimed that she “had a certain freedom and a certain connection with acting that I had never truly felt before” while performing in the play. Two years later, Cates had another Off-Broadway appearance at the Second Stage Theatre in David Henry Hwang’s Rich Relations. Cates made her Broadway debut in December 1989 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in a revival of Paddy Chayefsky’s The Tenth Man.

Cates revealed to a reporter in 1988, “In contrast to the theatre, which has “loads of fantastic women’s roles,” there are just not that many decent parts in movies.

I consider my favourite activity to be theatre.

As an actress, I’ve only felt content for roughly two years. I hardly ever watch my filmmaking.”

Through the early 1990s, Cates continued to regularly feature in movies, frequently in supporting or ensemble performances. These movies include Bodies, Rest & Motion (1993), Drop Dead Fred (1991), Heart of Dixie (1989), Shag (1989), Bright Lights, Big City (1988), and Date with an Angel (1987). These movies had inconsistent to negative reviews, and their box office performance was lacklustre.

Cates had been cast as Steve Martin‘s daughter in the popular comedy Father of the Bride (1991), but she had to leave since she was expecting her first child.

Cates co-starred with her husband Kevin Kline in the fact-based comedy-drama Princess Caraboo (1994), which was released in 1994. This was Cates’ final movie before she ostensibly shifted her attention from acting to taking care of her children, Owen and Greta.

As a favour to her closest friend and former Fast Times at Ridgemont High castmate Jennifer Jason Leigh, who directed The Anniversary Party in 2001, Cates briefly returned to acting for one movie.

2015 saw Cates lending the video game Lego Dimensions her voice as Kate Beringer from the Gremlins.
