About Pat Croce
In 1996, as part of a group that purchased the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and led by Flyers founder Ed Snider and Comcast, he was appointed president of the organization and became a minority owner of the franchise. Under their ownership, the Sixers advanced all the way to the NBA Finals in 2001, having finished in last place in 1996.
Croce was well-known for his ability to personally greet fans and secure front-row seats for low-level 76ers staff members at home games including maintenance men, ushers, and concessionaires. He was the first trainer to work his way up to an ownership position with a major sports team, and as a result, he was featured on the cover of Success magazine. Additionally, he has been highlighted in Inc. magazine.
He began his professional life as a physical therapist, and his subsequent roles include serving as a physical conditioning and rehabilitation coach for the Philadelphia Flyers as well as an administrative director for the Sports Medicine Clinic at Haverford Community Hospital.
Croce was born in the United States to Italian American parents, while his mother was Irish American. He received his undergraduate education at West Chester University and his graduate education in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977.
He is a black belt in taekwondo and provided analysis and commentary on the sport during the Olympic Summer Games of 2016. Croce has worked as a television analyst for the NBA on NBC and served as a taekwondo commentator for the 2004 Summer Olympics since his departure from the 76ers. Pat Croce: Moving In was the title of the show he hosted on his own syndicated self-help television show in 2004, which debuted on September 13, 2004 and ran until 2005 before being discontinued.
He started Sports Physical Therapists in 1984 and expanded the company into a chain that included 40 facilities across 11 states before selling it for $40 million in 1993. Mike Schmidt, Julius Erving, and Charles Barkley were among the people he represented as clients.
In January of 2005, he was responsible for opening the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum in Key West, Florida. This museum cost $10 million. The museum is home to genuine objects associated with piracy, many of which come from Croce’s personal collection. In February of 2006, he created the Rum Barrel restaurant, which is located close to the museum and features a pirate theme. In February of 2010, it was reported that the museum would be relocating to St. Augustine, which is located in the state of Florida. On December 8, 2010, the museum opened to the public.
