Who Is OJ Simpson

OJ Simpson is a former American football player and Hollywood actor, but he is most well known for a string of controversies and crimes that he has been involved in. On top of being the best NFL player for five years straight in the 70s, playing for the Buffalo Bills, and having a starring role in the iconic Naked Gun film series, He has been on trial for the murder of his partner in the 90s. And in the late 2000s, he was convicted for armed robbery in Las Vegas, costing him nine years of his life and over $30 million dollars. There have been several TV shows and documentaries made about Simpson, most famously The People vs. O.J. Simpson, in which the criminal was played by Cuba Gooding Jr.

“The Juice”, is an American former football running back, broadcaster, actor, advertising spokesman, and convicted felon. OJ Simpson has a net worth of $3 million dollars, as of 2020.

How Did OJ Simpson Get So Rich?

Thanks to Simpson’s athleticism, he was awarded one of the best contracts in NFL history at the time, as he was offered a five-year contract, with each year bearing a salary of $650,000. Even in the 1990s, outside of the money he was making from NFL appearances and starring in the Naked Gun movies, OJ had a monthly income of $55,000, which would be close to $100,000 per month adjusted for inflation.

Most of his income at that time was largely thanks to being the commercial spokesperson for the car rental company Hertz, and the endorsement deal earned him millions of dollars. At this point in time, it’s estimated that he had racked up earnings of around $18 million. But it is now a lot less, and he’s even in debt as he still owes $33.5 million to the two families of the victims he robbed and kidnapped in 2008.

Why Is He So Famous?

In the late 1980s, Simpson starred in Naked Gun: Files From The Police Squad. Naked Gun was an adaptation of the 70s TV show, Police Squad!, and though that show was cancelled after just six episodes, it proved to be much more successful in the medium of film. It spawned two sequels in the 90s, both of which Simpson starred in and were as successful as the original. The film series, led by Leslie Nielsen, has grossed a total of $350 million worldwide, and that’s not including DVD and syndication sales, as the films have gone on to become iconic and some of the most popular 80s and 90s comedies there are. Unfortunately, the movies have become a little harder for audiences to watch given Simpson’s heavy involvement with them.

More famously than his role in The Naked Gun, and more famously than his tenure with the Buffalo Bills, O.J. is best known for the trial of The People vs. O.J. Simpson, in which he was accused of murdering his ex-wife and her partner. All signs pointed to the fact that he did it, and there were so many facts that proved Simpson’s alibi to be false, but the actor got away with all charges. It was thanks to a team of lawyers including Robert Kardashian and Johnnie Cochran, who famously came up with the slogan, “if it doesn’t fit, you must acquit,” after the glove that was found on the murder scene didn’t seem to fit OJ’s hand.

In 2008, the half of the world that was on his side found out that Simpson may actually have been capable of murder, as he was charged with multiple felonies, most notably armed robbery and kidnapping. After the event of the kidnapping, the jury got it right this time and he was sentenced to between nine and 33 years in prison. The disgraced football hero didn’t even spend the minimum time in prison, as he was let out just short of nine years in to his sentence, leading many to believe that wasn’t long enough.

In 2018, Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor, comedian, and prankster behind the famous characters Ali G, Bruno, and Borat came the closest than anybody else did to getting a confession out of Simpson. In his show Who Is America?, which was already infamous for some outrageously controversial interviews with politicians, he saved the most shocking interview of them all until the last scene of the series. Cohen went undercover as Gio Moraldo, an Italian “billionaire playboy” type character, and whilst interviewing Simpson, he playfully joked about O.J. murdering his wife. Simpson found the jokes hilarious and though he never does confess, he had a huge grin on his face the whole time, and Who Is America? is now known for that one scene.

What Made OJ Successful?

A common misbelief is that O.J. Got the nickname Juice’ because the abbreviation of his name, O.J., stands for orange juice, and though that might be a minor reason, it isn’t the main one. As Juice is a synonym for electricity, and as O.J. had a kinetic personality and was full of energy, that’s what he became known as.

Simpson was extremely athletic and he wasn’t awarded one of the best salaries in the NFL at the time for no reason. The football player rushed over 1000 yards in 1972, and in the following year he became the first ever player to rush over 2000 yards in just one season. And topping off an insane run, Simpson ended 1975 by rushing more than 1800 years and scoring 16 touchdowns. The athlete is still regarded as one of the best American footballers there ever were, as he played in six pro bowls and was even inducted in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the mid-80s.

O.J. Simpson used to be charming and very charismatic, which is why people had fallen in love with him besides his amazing football stats. Because he had the whole package, the celebrated director James Cameron even considered him for the titular role in The Terminator, and though the role eventually went to Arnold Schwarzenegger, it crazy to imagine Juice as the character.

Summing-Up

Simpson had a great sports career in the 70s, and he had a just as great movie career in the 80s, but now O.J. Simpson’s name is disgraced and nobody wants to be associated with him. Now, Simpson’s net worth has been diluted to as little as $3 million, and as that is estimated and he still owes money to the families of the lives he has ruined, it’s likely that it’s even less than that. The only source of income Simpson currently has is the NFL pension, however, that is reportedly worth as much as $5 million.
