Snooki Polizzi, a self-described “Guidette” who is little and pouf-wearing, is undoubtedly the most adored of the Jersey Shore group of overnight stars. Ironically, Snooki nearly quit the show as the first person after her outrageous antics on their first date alienated the other cast members.
Snooki, who is of Italian and Chilean ancestry, was adopted by Italian-American parents when she was six months old. She was born in Santiago, Chile in 1987. She received the nickname “Snooki” from a character in the movie Save the Last Dance while growing up in Marlboro, New York, after she was the first of her friends to have sex in middle school.
She received the moniker when a student at Marlboro High School, where she was a well-liked cheerleader, and it still exists today.
Prior to making her reality television debut on MTV’s Is She Really Going out with Him, she trained to become a veterinary technician at a community college after graduating from high school. In a 2009 episode of the show about women who date jerks, the 4-foot, 9-inch star made an appearance alongside her ex-boyfriend Justin (also known as the “Jerz Pud”).
Snooki Party Out
She quickly responded to an MTV Facebook ad for a new reality series looking for young Italian-Americans who enjoy partying at the Jersey Shore.
Along with other cast members Jenni ‘JWoww’ Farley, Vinny Guadagnino, Sammi Giancola, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Paul ‘DJ Pauly D’ DelVecchio, Michael ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino, and Angelina Pivarnick, it was a choice that transformed her life and made her an instant sensation.
Snooki initially said she wanted to leave Jersey Shore, but a surprising incident that happened while the show was being filmed not only won Snooki back over with her cast mates, but also unintentionally propelled her to notoriety.
Snooki was savagely assaulted in the face by a drunken bar patron while they were filming in Seaside Heights.
The blow was so brutal that it was taken out of subsequent broadcasts of the episode.
The other cast members joined together in support of her, and for days the punch was discussed around water coolers and in the media.
Snooki Makes Good
The punch’s impact on Snooki’s earnings was unexpected. According to reports, the small dynamo’s appearance costs increased from $2,000 per event prior to the episode’s airing to $10,000 per event thereafter.
The Jersey Show was likewise successful, and the stars—who reportedly made $5,000 each episode in the first season—agreed to a pay increase to $10,000 per episode in the second season and another bump to $30,000 in the third.
Snooki has become a mainstay of popular culture. Even Barack Obama joked about Snooki at the 2010 White House Press Correspondents dinner, but he later said he had never heard of her on The View. Snooki is writing a book called A Shore Thing about a girl yearning for love on the boardwalk in her spare time.
