Who Is Neil Patrick Harris
He was a doctor at the age of 16 and a hormonal womanizer at 32—although his onscreen characters seemed to progress in a bit of a backward direction, Neil Patrick Harris will remain immortalized as everyone’s favorite child prodigy and everyone’s favorite trippin’ on ecstasy car thief.
American actor Neil Patrick Harris has a net worth of $50 million dollars, as of 2020.
Paging Dr. Neil
Before he landed the role that would make him a household name and the envy of every teenage boy, Neil was a dog. He nabbed the part of Toto in his school’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Neil caught the acting bug, curing with small roles in films like Purple People Eaters and Clara’s Heart, when he landed his star-making role in Doogie Howser, M.D.
In the TV series, Neil played a dreamy teenage doctor who stole the hearts of viewers and garnered him a 1990 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Male Performer as well as a Golden Globe nomination. The series lasted four years before it came to an end in 1993 and Neil’s prospects started to fizzle out. He went on to snag a role in the flick Starship Troopers in 1997, but it looked like he was doomed to the child star curse.
Going back to his onstage rather than onscreen roots, in 1997 Neil was cast in the L.A. production of Rent in which he played Mark Cohen. For his role in the musical, Neil began to be recognized for his singing and dancing talents and was given a Drama League Award for his performance.
Neil made appearances in films like The Next Best Thing and Undercover Brother, but in the new millennium, his career was on a serious downswing. Oddly, it was a tiny cameo that effectively revived his career and brought him back into the public’s attention. In 2004, he parodied his squeaky clean kid doctor image when he appeared as himself in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Fans were delighted to see him portraying a drugged-out failed child star as determined to find women as Harold and Kumar were to find a White Castle.
The following year, back on the radar, he landed the role that, not since Doogie Howser, M.D., would bring him back into millions of living rooms on How I Met Your Mother. In the series, he portrayed a womanizing Barney Stinson who never backs down at the challenge of seducing a woman. The role earned him multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
Daddy Day Care
Although the actor has managed to lead a career that is void of any Hollywood drama, that didn’t keep the rumor mills from publishing suspicions of Neil’s sexual orientation. In 2006, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton outed Neil on his website, posting pictures of him with his supposed long-term boyfriend. Rather than avoid the rumors, Neil confronted them head-on and openly admitted that he is a gay man. He and his long-term partner, actor David Burtka, had twins—a boy and girl, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace—in October 2010 through a surrogate.
Although monogamy is something of a foreign concept for Neil’s onscreen character, this modern family man proves that if you stay out of the harsh spotlight, the Hollywood curse is irrelevant. We’re sure that Neil will make an excellent dad—and hey, if his kids ever get a scraped knee, they’ve got the perfect doctor to clean them up.
Defining Quote “I never thought that snorting coke off the a** of stripper would reinvent my career so well.”
