Melissa Jeanette Franklin is a former professional swimmer and five-time Olympic gold medalist. She held the world record in the 200-meter backstroke. As a member of the U.S. national swim team, she has also held the world record in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

Yet Missy Franklin didn’t always have it easy. In fact, when she joined the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 2008 she didn’t qualify. In 2012 she blew through the qualifying trials, won four gold medals, and was chosen as the World Swimmer of the Year.
In 2013, Missy played herself in one episode of the TV series Pretty Little Liars. There was also a documentary about her called Touch the Wall.
In the 2016 Rio Summer Olymics, while Franklin did not win any personal medal, she did win a gold medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay for swimming in the heats.
This awesome swimmer did not always want to be a sportsman. Her aquintance with water came about because her parents had a heightened sense of water safety and she learned to swim as a precaution. However, throughout her high school years, her talent showed through so obviously that the parents of other aspiring swimmers brought it to the attention of Franklin’s own parents.
During her early career as a swimmer, Missy did not want to take on endorsement or receive prize monies, preferring to keep her amateur status in order to compete in college.
Missy was born in Pasadena, California on May 5, 1995, as the only child of Dick and D. A. Franklin. She grew up in Aurora, Colorado and began taking swim classes there at the age of five, at the urging of her mother. She attended Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, and graduated in 2013. Her parents were originally Canadians but moved to the US when her father got a job in Denver, Colorado.
She’s currently an ambassador for the “Swim for Multiple Sclerosis project”.
