American rapper, songwriter and record executive from Washington Heights, New York City, MIMS is best known for his debut single “This Is Why I’m Hot”. MIMS has a net worth of $35 million dollars, as of 2020.

Mims – Product of His Environment

Mims is one of the fastest rising rappers in a long time. His lyrics aren’t groundbreaking, but his melodic and accessible flow earned him millions of fans.

Born of Jamaican-American heritage, Mims grew up in a predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood. The ‘hustler’ mentality within his environment stimulated Mims to strive for success and greatness.

Mims’ Early Battles

Mims lost his father when he was only 11 years-old. At 13, he dabbled into hip-hop using some DJing equipment bought by his mother. Around the same time, he received another present–a younger sister. Unfortunately, his mother died from the after-birth complications that accompanied his sister’s birth.

Devastated by such life-changing tragedies at a tender age, Mims faced two options: wallow in self-pity or forge ahead stronger. Using his passion for hip-hop as vehicle, he chose to turn his sorrows into strength.

Baby Steps

After a brief stint at Nassau Community College, Mims decided to full time plunge into hip-hop.

He made his first notable appearance on the song “Love Em All” by Canadian group Baby Blue Soundcrew, which was nominated for Best Video at the 2001 Much Music Awards. In 2003, he released the BlackOut Movement-laced single, “I Did You Wrong.” Despite the song’s bouncy, radio-ready vibe, it failed to make a dent on the charts. However, it made a good enough impression on the industry to earn Mims a tour slot alongside Method Man.

“This Is Why I’m Hot”

Mims went on to build his own American King Music imprint, which spawned the independently released smash, “This Is Why I’m Hot.” The song amalgamates fragments of various sub-genres into a catchy, anthemic tune.

Following the mainstream success of “This Is Why I’m Hot,” Mims soon became a bone of contention among major record companies. He settled for EMI Capitol Records.

Music Is My Savior

In March 2007, Mims released his self-titled debut Music Is My Savior (EMI Capitol). Though the album’s production is mostly dirty south-inspired, Mims’ style is indicative of his east coast influences, a cross between Jay-Z‘s braggadocio and Jim Jones‘ swagger.

Mims in His Own Words

“As an artist I want people to expect the unexpected. Don’t think for one minute that I am going to come this way all the time. You’ll hear one record and go wild–‘Wow. He did that?'”
