What could possibly be worse than losing your job? Try being fired twice from the same job! Dan Gilbert, the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, sacked Mike Brown as the team’s head coach for the second time in May 2014. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened to Mike Brown.
After the Cavaliers were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the 2010 NBA Playoffs conference semifinals, Gilbert first sacked Brown as their head coach. He was fired as a result of the defeat, which made the Cavaliers the first team in NBA history to post back-to-back 60+ win seasons without making it to the NBA Finals.
After some time, Gilbert came to the conclusion that firing Brown might have been a grave error. Brown was a well recognized coach around the league, and the team was never as good after he left. Brown even won Coach of the Year honors in 2009 after guiding Cleveland to a record-breaking 66-16 record.
But Brown would leave Cleveland in the past and eventually become the Los Angeles Lakers’ coach.

Brown was unable to decline the Lakers’ call asking if he would be interested in succeeding Phil Jackson as coach. But trying to emulate a legend like Jackson would be exceedingly difficult. Brown took over a squad whose supporters anticipated them to be in the NBA Finals each year.
Although Brown’s debut year as the Lakers’ head coach wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t adequate either. In the second round of the playoffs, the team would be eliminated.
After his first season as the Lakers’ head coach, Brown was for some reason given a short leash by the team’s ownership. The Lakers’ ownership had had enough when they dropped four of their first five games in the 2012–13 campaign. Brown was let go on November 9, 2012.
Back in Cleveland
In light of Brown’s sudden availability and the fact that the Cavaliers haven’t improved since he was sacked in 2010, Gilbert dialed his old head coach. Both parties decided to get past their differences, let the past go, and give their relationship another shot.
On April 24, 2013, Brown was formally rehired by the Cavaliers.
Gilbert had to sacrifice a lot of pride to rehire Brown, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t be willing to let him go at any time. Gilbert would fire Brown once more after just one season in Cleveland following a 33-49 record.
“This is a very tough business,” Gilbert said in a statement. “It pains all of us here that we needed to make the difficult decision of releasing Mike Brown. Mike worked hard over this last season to move our team in the right direction. Although, there was some progress from our finish over the few prior seasons, we believe we need to head in a different direction. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best.”
Bad Coaching or Bad Luck?
There is a motive behind why Brown keeps receiving offers to lead an NBA team. He is a very good individual who people want to succeed, to start with.
He’s not just a kind guy, but a decent coach as well. In 2003, he was an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs and helped them win the NBA title. He was also successful as a head coach. He guided his group to the Eastern Conference title in 2007 and was voted NBA Coach of the Year in 2009.
Unfortunately, Brown has never been the head coach of an NBA championship team, and in this day and age, that’s all that counts.
He may not be a terrific coach, but he certainly isn’t a horrible one. When it comes to being an NBA head coach, he has experienced his fair share of bad luck, but not all of his issues have been brought on by misfortune. Brown is what he is: a fairly competent, but not outstanding, head coach. He could undoubtedly lead a team to victory in the NBA Finals if he had enough talent to work with. But any club he coaches will have a dismal record if he just has mediocre talent to deal with.
