On May 18, 2002, Ward fought Arturo Gatti, the opponent with whom he became most identified as a result of their bout. The bout was a wild one, but a knockdown scored by Ward in the ninth round on Gatti proved to be the deciding factor, as Ward was awarded the victory by a majority decision.
