Michael Andrew Fox known professionally as Michael J. Fox, is a Canadian-American retired actor, author, film producer, and activist with an estimated net worth of $70 million. Fox is married to actress Tracy Pollan since 1988; they have four children. As a teenager in Canada, he starred on the sitcom Leo and Me. While the show only lasted for one season it was headway in his budding career. He soon made the move to Los Angeles at 18 to pursue his acting career, appearing in small film and TV roles, and in small number of commercials.
Fox was cast as conservative teenager Alex P. Keaton in the NBC sitcom Family Ties, that was in 1982, and the start of great things for Fox. The show, about a pair of ex-hippies whose children embraced traditional values, was well-received and a fortunate break for him. In fact, he was only cast in the role after Matthew Broderick turned it down. NBC head, Brandon Tartikoff, wasn’t sold that of Fox could carry the show and so it was a sink of swim time in his career. Had he not managed to pull off the character, quickly transforming his attitude and appearance, he may have needed to return to Canada with his tale between his legs. His portrayal of Alex was so popular however that the character changed in the screenplay becoming the show’s focus.
Fox eventually starred on Family Ties until its final episode on May 14, 1989. He won three Emmys for his performance. He also met Tracy Pollan when she guest-starred as Alex’s girlfriend, later becoming his wife in real life (1988).
Simultaneously to his appearances on Family Ties, he also began to rack up success credits starred in comedies, including Teen Wolf and Back to the Future. These films launched him as a movie star avoiding being pigeonholed to TV status. Back to the Future was a major success and he went on to appear in two sequels after Family Ties ended, as well as the popular comedies The Secret of My Success and Doc Hollywood. He tried his hand at dramatic roles as well, including Bright Lights, Big City and Casualties of War, however was less successful there and by the mid-’90s his movie career had slowed.
He continued to appear in supporting roles and voice work but with his film career stalled, Fox returned to TV in 1996. Thus time on the political sitcom Spin City, co-created by Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg. Playing the role of New York City Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty for four seasons, he again became acclaimed for his performances, winning an Emmy for the role.
In 1998, during the third season of Spin City, Fox made a startling revelation. He revealed that he had Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative nerve disorder. After being replaced by Charlie Sheen, Fox stayed on to serve as an executive consultant.
Fox continued to keep his career afloat guest-starring roles on shows like Scrubs, Boston Legal and Rescue Me, but has also invested efforts into raising awareness of the struggles of Parkinson’s patients. He has taken part in recording public service announcements, campaigning for politicians and writing books.
At the 2010 Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he delivered comedy monologues, along with William Shatner and Catherine O’Hara.
In 2012, NBC announced The Michael J. Fox Show, loosely based on Fox’s life. In 2018, Fox took on the role of Ethan West on the second season of the ABC political drama Designated Survivor.
