About Mary-Kate Olsen

Mary-Kate Olsen, the younger of the Olsen twin set, grew up sharing the spotlight with her sister Ashley, but it never put a rift in their tight-knit relationship. This dynamic duo has managed to tackle their public images, various projects and Dualstar Empire more gracefully than the majority of their child star-turned-mogul counterparts. Despite this shared responsibility, Mary-Kate has carved her own unique image as a fashionista with a bit of a dark side.

American fashion designer, former actress and producer Mary-Kate Olsen has an estimated net worth of $250 million dollars, as of 2023. Mary-Kate began her acting career nine months after her birth. Together with her twin sister Ashley Olsen, Mary-Kate shared the role of Michelle Tanner on the hit television sitcom Full House.

The world was introduced to Mary-Kate and her twin sister Ashley as infants on Full House, and she’s since grown into a fashionista and tabloid regular.

Friday Night Darlings

At the age of nine months, the Olsen twins were already stars. Competing against nine other sets of twins, they won the shared role of Michelle Tanner on the sitcom Full House in 1987. The Olsen twins bewitched audiences by the age of four.

Sensing the twins’ talent, their family hired attorney Robert Thorne for salary negotiation and four years later, Robert became the CEO of the twin’s empire—Dualstar Entertainment Group.

The Olsen empire began when the twins, at the age of six, released their first album, Brother for Sale and aired their first TV movie, To Grandmother’s House We Go. Their music video compilation, Our First Video, raked in $750 Million.

In 1995, they showed their real acting chops in It Takes Two, which earned $1.6 million.

Although their parents divorced a year later, they still managed the twins’ careers. From that moment on, the twins released a slew of products, such as The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, the TV series Two of a Kind and spin-off movies like Passport to Paris. Games, appearances on talk shows, perfume lines, books, magazines—there was nothing that these now-teen moguls couldn’t do.

Their success was untouchable—their clothing line at Walmart earned $400 million alone.

Meet The Press

When they were 17, public interest in the twins’ graduated from children vying for their products to tabloids fascination with their private lives.

Mary-Kate began dating David Katzenberg, the son of a Hollywood executive and co-founder of Dreamworks. She and her sister were among People’s 50 Most Beautiful and they shared the cover of Vanity Fair. They were also awarded their own star on Hollywood’s walk of Fame in 2004. A few months later, they graduated from Campbell High School.

It was a simple photograph that sparked scandal. The paparazzi snapped more than just Mary-Kate’s puckered pout; they also uncovered a dangerously thin figure and protruding ribs. It all boiled over when Mary-Kate checked into rehab for anorexia just before her 18th birthday. Despite the rumors, Mary-Kate finished rehab a month later.

Finally turning 18, the twins took control of Dualstar and enrolled in New York University’s Gallatin School. In the meantime, Mary-Kate broke it off with David and started dating Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos III.

However, Stavros broke Mary-Kate’s heart by dumping her six months later for Paris Hilton.

Independent Icon

Mary-Kate finally began to shine independently from Ashley—as a fashion icon. She’s credited by the New York Times for creating the Bohemian Bourgeois (BoBo) look, and appeared on the cover of W Magazine’s January 2006 issue.

She then took a leave of absence from NYU.

The following year, the twins emerged in a couture campaign for Badgley Mischka, who named them America’s young style icons. The duo then released their own stunning, high-end clothing line called The Row and modestly priced Elizabeth and James. Both collections continue to outfit stars such as Heidi Klum, Olivia Palermo and Jessica Biel.

Mary-Kate continued to shine on her own by landing a part on Showtime’s drama, Weeds. But things took a grim turn when she was linked to the mystery surrounding Heath Ledger’s 2008 death. Heath’s masseuse, who found him unconscious in an apartment he was renting from Mary-Kate, reportedly called her three times before dialing 911. The pair was rumored to be dating at the time of his death.

Besides working on her widely acclaimed fashion line, Mary-Kate is flexing her acting muscle on a role in Beastly. Although the twins’ pasts have been so intimately linked, Mary-Kate has created her very own persona—the ultimate fashion diva who continues to reinvent herself and her style.

“It’s one thing after the next, the most far-fetched thing that could possibly be said has already been said. There’s nothing I can do about it really.”
