About Mario Lopez
In Chula Vista, California, on October 10, 1973, Lopez was born. He is the son of Mario Alberto López Pérez and Elvira Soledad Trasvia. Lopez grew up in a Catholic household. Both of his parents left Mexico to emigrate. His mother was born in Tijuana, Territorio Norte de Baja California, while his father was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa. His younger sister Marissa is wed to Kailee Wong, a former linebacker for the Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings in the NFL.
When Lopez was 10 years old, a talent agent saw him perform at a dance recital. Before making TV appearances, he first worked in regional advertisements and commercials.
He competed in the 160-pound weight class for Chula Vista High School’s wrestling squad during his time there (73 kg). His senior year, he finished second in the San Diego Section competition and seventh overall California. His graduation was in 1991.
At the age of three, Lopez began his tap and jazz instruction. When he was 7 years old, he also participated in wrestling, karate, and tumbling at his neighborhood Boys and Girls Club. He excelled in these as well as other pursuits in which his mother had placed him.
As the younger brother Tomás in the ephemeral ABC comedy series a.k.a. Pablo, Lopez made his acting debut in 1984. He was hired the same year to perform three seasons as a percussionist and dancer on Kids Incorporated. He was chosen to play a Latino child named Mario who is facing deportation as a guest role on the sitcom The Golden Girls in March 1987. He was chosen to play Felipe’s pal in a supporting role in the 1988 film Colors.
Lopez was given the five-year role of A.C. Slater in the television sitcoms Saved by the Bell (1989–1993) and its offshoot Saved by the Bell: The College Years (1993–1994) in 1989.
He hosted his debut NBC program, Name Your Adventure, in 1992. He presented the MTV reality programs America’s Best Dance Crew and MTV’s Top Pop Group in addition to the serial tabloid Extra. In the 1997 television film Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story, Lopez played Olympic diver Greg Louganis.
Despite some difficulty due to a cat allergy, he hosted the Animal Planet program Pet Star from 2002 to 2005. The Miss America pageant was hosted by Lopez in 2007, 2009, and 2010. From June 2006 through June 2008, Lopez was romantically linked to professional dancer Karina Smirnoff, his Dancing with the Stars partner.
As Dr. Christian Ramirez, Lopez joined the cast of the daytime serial opera The Bold and the Beautiful in March 2006. With his professional partner and then-girlfriend Karina Smirnoff, who was making his series debut, Lopez signed up to compete in the third season of Dancing with the Stars on ABC that same year. They came in second, losing to Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke’s team.
On Broadway in New York’s A Chorus Line in the fall of 2008, Lopez got to know dancer, actress, and producer Courtney Mazza. On December 1st, 2012, they tied the knot in Punta Mita, Mexico. They have two sons and a daughter. On April 15, 2008, Lopez made his Broadway debut outside of television in the role of Zach in the revival of the musical A Chorus Line.
There are three non-fiction books by Lopez. The first, Mario Lopez Knockout Fitness, was written with Jeff O’Connell and released in 2008 who had previously written a fitness book with LL Cool J.
Early in 2010, his book Extra Lean was released; it quickly rose to New York Times bestseller status. On With Mario Lopez, his own nationally syndicated radio program, debuted in 2012 on Premiere Radio. In August 2014, Lopez started presenting the iHeartRadio Countdown’s Hot AC segment.
On September 27, 2011, Celebra Children’s Books, a part of Penguin Books, published a picture book named Mario and Baby Gia. In May 2012, Extra Lean Family was released.
Lopez started training in early 2017 and has a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in addition to his fitness regimen. In November 2022, he received his purple belt. Lopez played A.C. Slater once more in Saved by the Bell, Peacock’s follow-up series, in 2020.
In the Lifetime and KFC short film A Recipe for Seduction, Lopez also played Colonel Sanders. It was revealed in 2022 that Lopez is working to bring back the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo.
