Margaret Court, aka Margaret Smith Court, is the only tennis player to have won The Grand Slam, all four majors in the same calendar year, in both singles (1970) and mixed doubles (1963 with Ken Fletcher). She also won all four majors in doubles, although in different years. Court owns 24 major titles in singles and 64 major titles altogether, both of which are the most of any player, male or female, in tennis history. Margaret also holds more singles titles at a single major than any other player, 11 at the Australian Open.
Margaret Court had a big serve, and she loved to attack at the net, where her exceptional reach earned her the nickname “The Arm” from Billie Jean King. She could also take advantage of her outstanding fitness and play as steadily at the baseline as the situation required.
Court was one of the few players to compete at the highest levels as a mother. She took two breaks from the tour to give birth, in 1972 and in 1974, returning to play later in the same years.
Margaret Court helped Australia win six Federation Cups, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, and 1970 as a player, and three as a captain, 1965, 1968, and 1971. In 2003, Australia honored Margaret by naming the second largest stadium at Melbourne Park, the site of the Australian Open, Margaret Court Arena.
