About Lyle Lovett
With a Texas country style, Lyle Lovett’s music also embraces elements of jazz, gospel, and the blues. His music is mainly influenced by Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Willis Alan Ramsey and Bob Wills. Lyle Lovett was born in Klein, Texas, a small town named after his great-grandfather, a Bavarian weaver, named Adam Klein. He was raised on his family’s horse ranch and only began to writing songs and playing music after he began attending Texas A&M University in the late 70s. At the university he was majoring in journalism and was a classmate of Robert Earl Keen. After returning from Germany where he had been studying abroad, he began to make small performances in local clubs and at folk festivals in Texas.
Audiences liked his blended style and in 1983, he landing a spot in the 1983 Mickey Rooney TV movie Bill: On His Own. In 1984, Nanci Griffith recorded his “If I Were the Woman You Wanted” on her Once in a Very Blue Moon album, and he sang on the album and on Last of the True Believers. On the strength of his demo record that came to Guy Clark, he sent it to Tony Brown who signed Lyle Lovett to MCA Records in 1986. He released his self-titled album the same year, but his commercial breakthrough came with his second album, Pontiac. It was less country-oriented than the previous release and resinated with resonated with a wider audience, eventually being certified Gold by the RIAA.
The two albums established Lovett as an artist whose appeal extended far outside of country. His albums included lyrical ballads, character studies, and dry wit. Lovett expanded his musical reach further with Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, releasing in swing and jump blues. Together with the band, the singer went further in an eclectic musical direction in subsequent releases, complete with horn section and pianos.
His popularity increased in the early ’90s with the release of Joshua Judges Ruth and I Love Everybody. After experimenting in R&B; and gospel (not to mention the married life with actress Julia Roberts), Lovett returned the country fold with The Road to Ensenada in 1996, winning “Best Country Album” at the Grammys. He followed the album up with Step Inside This House, and continued releasing until 2012. Since then while he has not released new music he has remained relevance with regular live performances and being an active member of the Americana and Texas country scene
