Interesting Facts

  • The youngest of 9 siblings
  • Derived the ‘Fiasco’ part of his name from the song “Firm Fiasco”
  • Influenced by Thelonius Monk as a child

Early Life

Lupe Fiasco was exposed to so many different cultures as a child. His father was a prolific African drummer. His mom, a gourmet chef, traveled around the world, with Lupe in tow. Lu dabbled in rap in 8th grade, but he delved into hip-hop completely at 17, drawing largely from his influences: Crucial Conflict, Twista, Nas, and others.

Label Troubles

In the formative years of his career, Lupe was passed around from one label to another. He initially found a home, along with his crew Da Pak, at Epic Records. The group was dismantled after their first single. What seemed like a fresh start at Roc-a-Fella didn’t fall through, but Jay-Z continued to show his support in other ways. Arista later picked him up, but the search for a record deal continued shortly after Arista head L.A. Reid was relieved of his position. Former B.I.G. manager, Mark Pitts, would later help bring Lupe to his current home at Atlantic.

Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor

Lupe first showcased his lyrical acumen on Kanye West’s smash, “Touch The Sky.” However, it was his own skateboard anthem, “Kick Push” that coasted him all the way to the hearts of hip-hop heads everywhere. His debut, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, was released on September 19, 2006. Jay-Z executive-produced the album, but it was issued on Lupe’s label 1st & 15th and distributed through Atlantic.

The Cool

A year later, Lupe followed his critically acclaimed debut with a conceptualized album dubbed Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool. Again, his unique brand of imagery had fans and critics singing his praise.
