Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, known by Lupe Fiasco, was born on February 16, 1982 and is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of $15 million. He rose to fame in 2006 following the success of his critically acclaimed debut album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. He also performs as the frontman of post punk band Japanese Cartoon under his real name.
Fiasco was born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco on February 16, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois. Born of West African descent, he was one of nine children of Shirley Jaco, a gourmet chef, and Gregory Jaco, an engineer. Growing up he was exposed to so many different cultures as a child. His father was a prolific African drummer. His mother, a gourmet chef, traveled around the world, with Lupe in tow. Lu started rapping in 8th grade, but he went all in on hip-hop at 17, drawing largely from his influences like Crucial Conflict, Twista, Nas, and others.
Lupe was passed around from one label to another. He was rapping along with his crew Da Pak, at Epic Records. The group however was dissolved after their first single. At Roc-a-Fella it didn’t work out either, but Jay-Z continued to show his support in other ways. Arista later signed him, but the search for a record deal continued shortly after Arista head L.A. Reid was relieved of his position. Former B.I.G. manager, Mark Pitts, would later help bring Lupe to his current home at Atlantic.
Lupe first showcased his lyrical skills on Kanye West’s smash, “Touch The Sky.” It was his own skateboard anthem, “Kick Push” that allowed him to enter the consciousness of the wider rap realm. His debut, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, was released on September 19, 2006. Jay-Z executive-produced the album, but it was issued on Lupe’s label 1st & 15th and distributed through Atlantic.
A year later, Lupe followed his critically acclaimed debut with a conceptualized album dubbed Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool. Again, his unique brand of imagery had fans and critics singing his praise.
As the second part of a planned trilogy of albums, Fiasco released Drogas Wave, in 2018. Drogas Light was its predecessor followed by Skulls. As of 2023, Lupe Fiasco’s net worth is estimated to be $15 million.
