Lev Davidovich Bronstein, well known as Leon Trotsky, was a Soviet Marxist revolutionary, political thinker, and politician who lived from 7 November 1879 to 21 August 1940. Lev Davidovich Bronstein, who was born on November 7, 1879, was moved to Odessa at the age of eight to attend school. He was exposed to Marxism in his late teens, and soon after that he started assisting in the formation of the South Russian Worker’s Union.
Due to his involvement in a revolt, Trotsky was detained and sent to prison in Serbia in 1898. By using a fake passport to flee in 1902, he was able to permanently drop the name Bronstein in favor of his now-famous identity, Leon Trotsky. After serving a second brief sentence for his involvement in the unsuccessful Russian Revolution of 1905, Trotsky was released and spent the following ten years of his life in various locations around Western Europe and even the United States.
Contribution of Trotsky to the Russian Revolution
Trotsky would return to his country of origin after Tzar Nicholas the Second was overthrown in 1917. Upon his return, Trotsky joined Lenin’s Bolshevik Party and rose to prominence as one of the revolution’s leaders. Trotsky was appointed the People’s Commissioner for Foreign Affairs when Lenin took the helm of the newly formed Soviet Union. After drafting the agreement to withdraw the Soviet Union from World War One, Trotsky was given leadership of the Red Army a year later. He was second only to Lenin in terms of power within the Soviet Union.
Stalin’s exile of Trotsky
Trotsky appeared to have found his position, serving his country, but this steadiness was only going to last a short while. Following Lenin’s passing in 1924, Trotsky, who had been chosen as his successor, lost the leadership race to a cunning Joseph Stalin. With Stalin in charge, Trotsky gradually lost his position of authority inside the Soviet government before being sent into exile once more.
Trotsky was assassinated
Trotsky wrote critiques of Stalin’s rule of the Soviet Union while in exile. In retaliation, Stalin charged Trotsky and 16 other adversaries with hatching a scheme to overthrow him. One of Stalin’s men struck Trotsky with an ice axe in his Mexico home on August 20, 1940. A day later, he would ultimately pass away from his wounds, putting an end to the life of one of the most politically charged individuals of the 20th century.
