“Super Mex” was born in poverty to parents of Mexican descent, he never knew his father and was raised by his mother and her father, a gravedigger. He first worked in the cotton fields at age five. He started playing golf with one rusty club and some used balls, sneaking into country clubs to practice. At eight he started caddying, after eighth grade he had to quit school and worked full time, caddying and shining shoes. At seventeen he joined the Marine Corps and spent four years, although the last year and a half was mostly spent golfing with officers. The next year he won the Open for the first time, he has 29 PGA Tour wins, 21 other pro wins, and six majors to his credit.
