Lance Dwight Alworth is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League and National Football League and Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Alworth was raised in Hog Chain, Mississippi, although being born in Houston, Texas. Prior to enrolling at the University of Arkansas, he played football at Brookhaven High School. He received 15 letters during his time in high school. Ann Alworth, Alworth’s sister, qualified for the Olympic Games trials by running the 50 and 75 yard sprints quickly enough to receive an invitation, but she turned it down. The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates both offered Alworth baseball contracts when he graduated from high school.
Lance “Bambi” Dwight Alworth played professionally football for the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League (AFL), National Football League (NFL), and Dallas Cowboys of the NFL, was born on August 3, 1940. He played for 11 seasons, from 1962 to 1972, and is frequently regarded as one of the finest wide receivers of all time. In 1978, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was the first athlete inducted whose primary league of play was the AFL. Also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame is Alworth.
