About Keyshia Cole
Seven studio albums, one extended play, two mixtapes, 24 singles (including 11 as a featured artist), and 31 music videos and Keyshia Cole’s career is far from coming to a close. Cole’s first appearance on a national record chart was her debut single, “Never” which peaked at number 71 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list. Later, she was a featured artist on Snoop Dogg‘s 2004 hit “Let’s Get Blown” a West Coast hip-hop song that peaked at number 54 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
On March 23, 2004, Cole’s debut song, “Never” with Eve, was released to promote the Barbershop 2: Back in Business album. Despite the single’s failure to chart, it eventually ended up as the last song on her self-titled debut album. Early in 2005, Cole completed her debut album. It sold 89,000 copies in the first week after release, ranking number 6 on the Billboard 200. Since then, it has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and been certified platinum by the RIAA.
Keyshia is the biological daughter of Francine “Frankie” Lons (1960-2021) and boxing coach Virgil Hunter. She was born on October 15, 1981, in Oakland, California. Cole is a part Mexican and of African-American ancestry. Her mother struggled with alcohol and crack cocaine addiction. Frankie Lons, Cole’s mother, passed away on July 19, 2021. It was determined that a narcotic overdose was the cause of her death.
When Cole was a young adolescent, she recorded with MC Hammer and eventually became friends with Tupac Shakur. Along with Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Toni Braxton, Monica, Chanté Moore, and Brandy, Tupac came to be one of her musical influences. She has since achieved enormous success of her own and is close friends with Monica.
Keyshia has 11 tattoos. She has a tattoo on her lower abdomen, a rosary bead on her left wrist with the cross on her thumb, the words “Truly Blessed” surrounded by blue stars and a butterfly on her left shoulder, a bikini line tattoo, a red heart below her right ear, the words “Have Faith” on the side of her neck, a crown and red hearts on the back of her left hand, a small black heart on her right hand. Always obsessed with music and pop culture, at the age of 18, Cole relocated to Los Angeles to further her musical career.
During this time, Cole worked with musicians from her home region of the Bay Area, including Messy Marv and D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Tone. She started working on her second album in early 2006 after releasing her maiden album in 2004.
Jimmy Iovine, the head of Interscope Records and Universal Music Group, recruited Cole to its subsidiary label Geffen Records after A&M Records went out of business through a merger with Octone Records in early 2007. This was a similar record label trade to that of The Game from Interscope to Geffen a year earlier in order to avoid his contractual obligations with his former rival, rapper 50 Cent, and his group, G-Unit.
In September 2007, Cole, who is now signed to Geffen, released her second album, Just Like You. The RIAA awarded the album a platinum certification, and it has subsequently moved 1.7 million copies in the US. She released her third studio album, A Different Me, in the US on December 16, 2008. The album eventually went on to sell 322,000 copies in its first week, making Cole’s first-week sales the greatest of her career. The RIAA also awarded the album a platinum certification.
Between the beginning and the middle of 2008, Cole had a number of guest appearances on songs like “I Got a Thang for You” with rapper Trina, “Boyfriend/Girlfriend” with Atlanta hip hop group C-Side, and “Game’s Pain” with west coast native The Game. On BET, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is’ third season debuted in October 2008. The 10-episode season was a continuation of the previous one, which followed Keyshia’s family and gave an inside look at her third studio album, A Different Me. On December 16, 2008, the series came to an end.
Cole started dating former NBA player Daniel Gibson in May 2009. On January 1st, 2010, they got engaged. On December 21, 2010, Faith Evans’ fourth studio album, Calling All Hearts, was made public. It featured contributions from Timbaland, Nicki Minaj, Tank, and Faith Evans. Cole’s mother Dr. Yvonne Cole was also featured on a gospel song that was inspired by Faith. It made its Billboard 200 debut at number nine with initial sales of 129,000 copies. Cole and Khale had their first child, on March 2, 2010. A year later, they were married.
Woman to Woman, her fifth studio album, was released on November 19, 2012. The album sold 96,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200. The album moved up to number three in its second week, where it sold 37,100 copies. The album sold 28,600 copies in its third week and dropped two slots to number five.
On March 31, 2014, Cole’s sixth studio album’s lead single, “Next Time (Won’t Give My Heart Away)” was made available for digital download. On April 1, 2014, the song began playing on US Rhythmic radio.
Cole confirmed the name of her sixth studio album, Point of No Return, in March 2014. In addition to “Rick James” “Next Time (Won’t Give My Heart Away)” featuring rapper Juicy J, was made available as a digital download in March 2014. On July 8, 2014, “She” was released as the album’s third single. The album was published on October 7, 2014, and has since sold more than 100,000 copies. It was also her sixth straight album to enter the top ten of the Billboard 200. It was her third album to debut at number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
The debut song from Cole’s seventh studio album, “You” which features Remy Ma and French Montana, was made available on January 27, 2017. She revealed the album’s title, 11:11 Reset, during a Rap-Up interview. The CD was made available on October 20, 2017. Within the first week, 15,000 copies were sold. Coles had the worst first week ever at this point. Around 100,000 copies of the album have been sold since then. The singles “You” and “Incapable” which came from the album, both made it into the top 20 of the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.
She has received many honors and recognitions for her work, including an ASCAP Award and a Billboard Music Award. She served as the anchor of the Fox Soul chat show One on One with Keyshia Cole from 2019 to 2020. Cole and Khale separated up in October 2020.
