Career
Harvick earned a contract with famed auto owner Richard Childress in 2000 after honing his skills in a number of various divisions, including the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. In order to place third overall in the championship standings and win Rookie of the Year, the Bakersfield native amassed three victories. For the next season, Childress had selected Harvick for a constrained Sprint Cup schedule. On February 18, 2001, everything changed.
When Dale Earnhardt tragically passed away during the Daytona 500’s final lap, Childress made the decision to advance Harvick earlier than anticipated.
