While there he participated in the ETSU Blugrass Program. Kenny graduated in 1990, but before that, in 1989, he released on his own initiative an album that he sold in the local Johnson City clubs. After he graduated, Kenny went to Nashville and performed regularly at some clubs there. He got a regular gig at The Turf, which was a honky tonk bar in the historic part of the city.

His fortune comes almost entirely from his music career. His albums have almost all be gold or platinum sellers, there have been many successful singles, he performs regularly in concerts and he gets the royalties from the songs he has written.

Almost all of Kenny Chesney’s fortune has been made through his singles and album sales. By the time he released his fifth album Everywhere We Go he had become hugely successful and it reached platinum sales making him a very rich man by age 31.

Kenny is a self-taught musician, and his talent as a country singer early on led to him becoming a familiar face in the Nashville club scene. His talent extended to song writing not just performing, and this led to his being discovered in 1992 by Clay Bradley of BMI. He recommended Kenny to Troy Tomlinson at the Opryland Music Group. Both these men were impressed with the young Kenny and signed him up as a songwriter. In 1993, Kenny landed a recording deal with Capricorn Records, and his career as a country singer-songwriter was launched.

His first, and only album for Capricorn was a modest success. It was titled My Wildest Dreams which was prophetic, as Kenny’s wildest dreams were about to be realized. Capricorn closed down their country music division in 1994. Kenny was soon signed by BNA Records, and released his next album All I Need to Know in 1995.

Three of the songs on the album were released as singles and all achieved some chart success. Album number three Me and You appeared in 1996, and Kenny had made such a good impression as a country singer that he was awarded the 1997 Academy of Country Music’s New Male Vocalist of the Year award.

I Will Stand , Kenny’s fourth album was released in 1997, and one song from the album She’s Got it All soared to number one. This was Kenny’s first number one hit in the country music charts. 1999 saw Kenny’s next album, his fifth, titled Everywhere We Go . Two of the songs from this album reached number one. On top of that success, this album was the first of Kenny’s to achieve platinum sales.

The year 2000 was the year Kenny released is first compilation album Greatest Hits. From 2002 to 2006 a Kenny Chesney album was issued each year, with the albums and the singles that came from them all achieving chart success. Kenny was now one of the most successful country music singers of the early 2000s. Another compilation album appeared in 2007 called Super Hits.

Also in 2007 Kenny took a slight risk when he released his album Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates. This album signaled a departure from pure country music, with a sound better described as gulf and western. Needless to say the album was a huge success. Kenny was now regularly winning awards, and he was showing no sign of slowing up his output. Albums appeared virtually every year from 2008 onwards. These included another greatest hits album in 2010. His 2020 offering Here and Now went straight to number one, and was his 16th album to chart in the top ten.

Talent and a desire to forge a career in country music are at the heart of Kenny’s success. His work ethic is remarkable, which is proved by his large and consistent output of albums. Kenny is a workaholic and is happy to admit that he loves his job, and often says that when you love what you do, then success will follow. Kenny took risks early in his career when he was singing in the clubs of Johnson City and Nashville. The risks paid off, and he has never regretted taking those chances.
