As an overbearing mother of eight on Jon & Kate Plus 8, then a sobbing tabloid superstar when she and her husband, Jon Gosselin, played their bitter divorce out in the media.
Who Is Kate Gosselin
When TLC first introduced its new reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 in 2007, the stars were Jon and Kate Gosselin’s adorable eight children. Two years later, the attention shifted to the couple’s deteriorating marriage, their bitter war of words and their blatant attempts at one-upping each other to maintain their high profiles. Kate Gosselin quickly went from a wholesome family favorite to a seedy supermarket tabloid star.
American TV personality Kate Gosselin has a net worth of $500 thousand dollars, as of 2020.
Full House 2.0
She was born Katie Irene Kreider in Pennsylvania, where she worked as a nurse at Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She met Jon Gosselin in 1997 at a picnic, and two years later, they were married. When she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, one of the leading causes of female infertility, she underwent fertility treatments in an effort to have children. In early 2000, she became pregnant with twins — Madelyn and Cara, born October 6, 2000.
After considering adoption, the couple decided to continue fertility treatments and Kate became pregnant again in 2003, this time with sextuplets. When the three girls and three boys — Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah and Joel — were delivered via C-section on May 10, 2004, the rare birth became only the second recorded sextuplet birth in Pennsylvania.
Off The Charts
The family’s career in reality showbiz began in 2005, when they were featured on a Discovery Health special, Surviving Sextuplets and Twins. The next year, they did a follow-up, Surviving Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later. Both were very successful and led to a deal for a series entitled Jon & Kate Plus 8. The show started airing on Discovery Health in April 2007 before moving to TLC for seasons 3-5. It became the highest rated TLC show.
In April 2009, tabloids started to report that Jon was having an affair when he was photographed leaving a bar with 23-year-old Deanna Hummel. Around the same time, there was speculation that Kate was having a relationship with her bodyguard. They both denied the rumors, but on June 22, 2009, they aired a special one-hour episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 where they announced that they would be getting a divorce.
They soon became tabloid fixtures, airing grievances through the press and giving tearful interviews. Jon was often being photographed with a rotating cast of young girlfriends. The show was put on hold as their bitter divorce continued to play out. The split was finalized on December 18, 2009.
Kate has continued to translate the publicity she got from the show and the divorce into a career in reality television. She appeared on the 10th season of Dancing with the Stars, TLC revived Jon & Kate Plus 8 as Kate Plus 8, about her life as a single mother, and the network announced she would host a new show, Twist of Kate, where she would visit mothers around the world with unique stories.
And, of course, what’s a good reality television career and public divorce without several tell-all books? She has authored numerous books about the challenges and joys of being a mother to eight. But the question remains: How does she actually have time to be a mother to eight when she’s running around starring in shows, giving interviews and writing books?
