Things can become very upside down and/or forgotten. The Buddhist garment, the kāṣāya, was originally supposed to be a symbol of homelessness and in many ways, humiliation. In taking to the garment one is essentially allowing others to mock them. The practitioner goes through much humiliation and pain and ascetic practices this way until they realize the truth of karma.
