About Joey Chestnut
Joey Chestnut is the stage name of Joseph Christian Chestnut. He is an American actor, competitive eater, and internet personality that’s best known for his many records in the competitive eating competitions, with his most first win being the one of the 92nd annual edition of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. In addition to his first profession, in recent years, Chestnut has developed an interest in acting and doing YouTube as well.
How did Joey Chestnut earn his net worth?
Winning Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests and championships certainly helped this media star become rich. After his win over LeFevre, he began attending other competitions. In late 2005, he made his debut appearance on Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in the Famous Fourth of July edition. He ate 32 hot dogs and was placed third behind Takeru Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas. Starting 2006, besides earning well over $500.000 per year, he began setting world records.
In 2006 alone, Chestnut won the record for the following: 47 grilled sandwiches, 118 jalapeño poppers, 9 lbs of pork, and 6 lbs of horseshoe sandwich, all of which were won and set in 10 minutes. In July 2007, he was able to defeat Kobayashi by consuming 66 hot dogs and buns in a little over 12 minutes. With the win, he won the 92nd Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and a whopping $10.000. He has been consistently winning all of the annual contests with the only exception being the one from 2015, in which Matt Stonie beat him with 62 to 60 eaten hot dogs. From all of his 13 wins in the past decade or so, Chestnut has earned himself well over $150.000.
Why is he so famous?
The multi-time winner of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is known for his fast eating. He was born on November 25, 1983, in Vallejo, California. He and his younger brother were both raised by his mother in Fulton County, Kentucky after his father left them when Joey was two years old. Joseph and his mother moved back to California in the 1990s and settled in San Jose. There, he attended the San Jose High School from which he earned his graduation in 2001.
After his high school graduation, Chestnut enrolled at the San Jose State University. He graduated in late 2006 and received his bachelor’s degree in construction management and engineer. Initially, he had the aspirations to become an engineer but after attending several food competitions, he found passion in the sport. He officially entered the competitive eating just a year earlier, in July 2005. His breakthrough performance was in a deep-fried asparagus eating championship, where he ate 6.3 pounds of asparagus in just 11 minutes and defeated then-champion Rich LeFevre.
What makes him so successful?
In addition to his main work, the competitive eater has made many appearances on television and that’s the main reason why he’s so successful. In the 2010s, he also began working as a construction engineer/manager for Gonsalves and Stronck. He worked in that position for other companies until 2016 when he gained international popularity with his triumphant victories at many competitive eating contests/competitions, including Nathan’s Hot Dog.
Since the early-2010s, Chestnut has become a media and television superstar. His first appearances on television came in the 2008 “Weekend Today” and “Man versus Food”. He continued to appear on other realities and television series such as “Hotel Impossible”, “The Playboy Morning Show”, “L’emission d’Antoine”, “Today” and “Desus and Mero”. Most recently, in 2018, he competed in the 30th season of “The Amazing Race” alongside his fellow competitive eater Tim Janus, where they placed eighth. Just a few months ago, Chestnut made his acting debut in the new animation “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?”.
Joey Chestnut is commonly known as the greatest eater in the world. The millionaire (currently worth $1.8 million) is a record-breaking thirteen-time winner of the widely popular competitive eating competition “Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest”, which he has won every year from 2006 to 2020, except in 2015.
In addition to these distinguished wins, this television and media sensation has made a name for himself by accumulating many world records at the likes of “Wing Bow”, “Krystal Square Off”, and “National Buffalo Wing Festival” to name a few.
