In 1956, shortly after finishing high school in Tulsa, Cale relocated to Los Angeles in an effort to pursue a career as a recording artist. Between 1958 and 1966, he found work as a studio engineer and also found time to record six non-album singles of his own, four of which were credited to the Johnny Cale Quintet and two of which were recorded as a solo artist. None of the records attracted much attention at the time, despite the fact that one of the songs would subsequently be linked to another singer.
