Jim McIngvale, whose full name is James Franklin McIngvale, is an American author, businessman, (occasional) producer, and television personality. He’s best known for his nickname “Mattress Mack” and began his business career in the 1970s. He gained national popularity the following decade after he became the co-owner and founder of Gallery Model Homes Inc, the largest independent furniture retailer in the Texas area.
He was born on February 11, 1951, in Starkville, Mississippi. He’s the son of George and Angela McIngvale. His father was a businessman and entrepreneur that served in the World War II, whilst his mother was a homemaker. His family moved to Dallas, Texas during his early teenage years where James attended the Bishop Lynch High School. After his high school graduation in 1969, he enrolled at the University of Texas and North Texas (State) University.
Whilst in university, McIngvale met his future wife Linda. The two married in the 1980s and have three children together – Laura, Elizabeth, and James Jr. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) when she was twelve. After they spent a significant amount of time at the Exposure Response Prevention Therapy, she learned how to control her disorder and began working for the Baylor College of Medicine. In the mid to late 2000s, with the help of her father, Elizabeth founded her own non-profit organization called Peace of Mind, which helps people with OCD.
Mattress Mack became a millionaire thanks to his many business ventures in the 20th century. In the year 1981, he started his furniture business by investing $5,000 and while using his own pickup truck. His business continued to grow and by the end of the century Gallery Model Homes became one of the largest independent furniture retailers in Texas. The current annual revenue of the company is in the region of $150 million. It is one of the largest stores not just in Texas but in the entire United States when it comes to mattresses and furniture sales.
Around the time his company was slowly booming, Jim McIngvale became a television personality appearing as a guest in many realities and talk shows. In 1992, he produced the action-comedy film Sidekicks that starred Chuck Norris, Jonathan Brandis, Beau Bridges, and Mako. For the creation of the film, he partnered with Chuck Norris and his campaign Kick the Drugs out of Schools. The businessman invested $8 million dollars in the production of the film. The film went on to gross more than $17 million during its domestic release.
After producing the aforementioned film Sidekicks, he made his first appearance on television by appearing in the WWE flagship show Raw. Shortly after, he made his first appearance on a late-night talk show alongside fellow furniture salesman Hilton Koch at Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Since the 2000s, he has been an occasional guest on Good Morning America, To Dine for with Kate Sullivan, Your Word with Neil Cavuto, and Fox and Friends.
Apart from his many businesses, McIngvale also became an author. In 2002, he published his first book Always Think Big in collaboration with John Ivanovich and Thomas Dunning. The book narrates the journey of his entrepreneurial career in depth. He has also spoken on multiple campaigns and conferences that focus on business methods. Outside of his professional life, the businessman is known for his political views.
