About Jim Kelly
Former American football quarterback James Edward Kelly spent eleven seasons with the Buffalo Bills in the National Football League. Additionally, he spent two seasons with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL.
Jim Kelly, a quarterback in the Hall of Fame, took the Buffalo Bills to the Super Bowl four times in a row and the playoffs eight times during his career. In the early 1990s, his skillful management of the “no-huddle” attack scared rival teams, and he frequently ranked among the league’s top passers. In 1990 and 1991, he was the NFL’s top passer. His passer rating of 101.2 in 1990 is still among the finest ever for a single season.
Kelly chose to sign with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL rather than the Bills, who had selected him in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, taking a detour on his way to the NFL. He completed 9,842 passes for 83 touchdowns while playing with the Gamblers over the course of two seasons. Kelly signed with the Bills following the 1985 season, when the USFL ceased operations.
Kelly accumulated 35,467 throwing yards, 2,874 completions, and 237 touchdowns during his 11 seasons in Buffalo. In eight of those 11 years, he passed for more than 3,000 yards, five times he was selected to the Pro Bowl, and in 17 playoff games, he completed 21 touchdown passes.
