Who Is Jennifer Garner
Her role as secret agent Sydney Barstow in Alias turned her into an overnight sensation, but the road to fame was an uphill battle for Jennifer Garner. The girl next door from a conservative religious family dabbled in minor roles in theater, television and film before J.J. Abrams hand picked her to be the leading lady in his CIA drama and changed her life. But she’s still a humble family girl and when they were married, Ben Affleck is quoted as saying “she has no idea how beautiful she is.”
American actress Jennifer Garner has a net worth ballparked at $80 million dollars, as of 2020.
From Understudy To Undercover
She was born Jennifer Anne to an English teacher mom and chemical engineer dad in Houston, but the family relocated to Princeton, West Virginia, then Charleston, West Virginia, before she went to Ohio for college. After college, she moved to New York to act in theater and landed small parts on shows like Spin City, Law & Order and Felicity. On the set of Felicity, she met her first husband, Scott Foley. The two tied the knot in 2000, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2003 just as her fame started to rise.
J.J. Abrams, the producer of Felicity, approached Jennifer in 2001 to audition for his new show, Alias. Garner, who had never thrown a punch in her life, took martial arts training to prepare, and was cast as his leading lady, an undercover CIA agent.
The show was an immediate success when it premiered in September 2001, and Garner became a favorite with fanboys and critics alike, scoring four consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama from 2002 to 2005. She won in 2002.
Re-Defining Hollywood’s Action Hero
The role challenged the actress’s good girl reputation and opened her up to new opportunities, including the 2003 blockbuster Daredevil. She played Elektra Natchios alongside future husband Affleck, and although the film was panned by critics, it was a commercial success, spawning her own spin-off movie, Elektra.
Following her split from Foley, Jennifer dated Alias co-star Michael Vartan for a year before starting a relationship with Affleck in 2004. Nine months into their romance, they were engaged, and they married on June 29, 2005, while she was pregnant with their first child. Her pregnancy was written into the sixth and final season of Alias, and their daughter, Violet, was born on December 1, 2005.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner later divorced however in 2018.
She continued to star in big budget studio films, like 13 Going on 30 and The Kingdom, but didn’t achieve commercial success again until she starred in the independent film Juno in 2007. The small movie became an unexpected hit thanks to a swirl of Oscar buzz around its writer, Diablo Cody, a former stripper. Cody ended up winning Best Original Screenplay at that year’s awards, and fans flocked to see the film.
She continues to appear in films, but otherwise chooses to stay out of the spotlight. She and Affleck closely guard their relationship and their two daughters (Seraphina was born on January 6, 2009) from the media — a huge contrast to Ben’s relationship with Jennifer Lopez before her.
Defining Quote “I’ve often said to J.J. Abrams, the creator [of Alias], ‘I don’t know why you cast me in this role. I don’t know why you thought I could do it. I know I was good in Dude, Where’s My Car?, but seriously…I can’t thank you enough!”
