Who Is Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges is an actor’s actor. Praised uniformly for his unpretentious demeanor and gifted performances, Bridges is the guy that, when he finally won a Best Actor Academy Award after numerous nominations and a celebrated 38-year career, all of Hollywood rose to give him a standing ovation.

American actor Jeff Bridges has a net worth of $100 million dollars, as of 2021.

The Family Business

Jeffrey Leon Bridges has been acting literally his entire life. Born the middle child of three children to parents Lloyd and Dorothy, themselves both successful actors, Jeff’s first role was as an uncredited infant in The Company She Keeps when he was less than a year old (and though few have seen the film, you can be sure he nailed the performance). A wryly self-described “product of nepotism,” Bridges remembers sitting on his parents’ bed while father Lloyd taught him the basics of acting. He and his brother Beau would appear on their dad’s hit TV show Sea Hunt whenever the producers needed another b-roll extra or drowning victim.

Never much for school, Jeff rebelled as a teenager and was sent to military academy for the beginning of his high school years. Unsurprisingly, the budding hippie hated it and managed to return to public school to finish his education. After a stint in the Coast Guard, he went to acting school, and then back to Hollywood. But it was still just the family business for Bridges and he didn’t take it too seriously, focusing instead on music, art and a broad fondness for drugs and women. Even in hindsight, his attitude was astonishingly blasé. It wasn’t until 1973 with The Iceman Cometh, two years after he was nominated for his first Academy Award for The Last Picture Show, that he decided to seriously pursue acting as a career.

Building Bridges

Family wisdom taught Bridges to diversify his parts lest he get typecast. So once he actually decided to be an actor, he chose a kaleidoscopic array of roles, some good, some not. He picked up his second Oscar nomination for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot in 1975. Then a string of duds, starting with the following year’s Rancho Deluxe (completely forgettable but for that Bridges met Susan Geston on set, who he would marry in 1977), and ending with Heaven’s Gate, a failure of epic proportions that ruined the director and nearly bankrupted the studio.

But Bridges lasted through all of it and bounced back quickly and conclusively. He was in John Carpenter’s Starman, the fabulous Fabulous Baker Boys and some say his best performance, Fearless. Still others, perhaps the more hazy bunch, would hail his best performance a few years later as The Dude in the Coen brothers‘ cult-smash The Big Lebowski—a film that turned out to be one of his most enduring, and that’s saying something for a career that includes King Kong and Tron.

There are plenty of actors with stunning talent and great resumes, so why the standing ovation at the Academy Awards when he won for Crazy Heart? Because the man who film critic Pauline Kael called “maybe the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor that has ever lived” is a rare thing: a three-decade headliner who has managed to avoid laziness and self-caricature, to keep choosing challenging roles and keep delivering resonant performances. Even though he is billed as a star, Jeff Bridges is and always has been an actor.

Defining Quote “Part of what I do is all about love and intimacy. Most movies are about love in one way or another.”
