About Javier Bardem

He’s the seductive Spanish actor whose fluid voice and three-dimensional performances keep us captivated to the screen. He now refers to Penelope Cruz, another of Spain’s hottest exports, as his wife and the mother of his child; this duo may be a tad hot to handle.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem has an estimated net worth of $20 million dollars, as of 2023.

You’ve seen him frightening everyone and winning an Oscar for it in No Country for Old Men.

A Family Enterprise

Javier, a young man who was born in Spain’s Canary Islands, was familiar with the complexities of the entertainment industry. His grandfather Rafael was an actor, his uncle Juan Antonio was a director, and his mother Pilar was a performer. It’s safe to assume that before Javier could speak, his future in the entertainment industry was already predetermined. Javier used to go to the theater where his mother performed and would watch her get ready every night, often witnessing her throw up out of nervousness before making her grand entrance.

Perhaps it was his mother’s habit of going to the trash right before being on stage that discouraged him from acting, but as Javier grew older, he developed a stronger interest in painting. In an effort to make ends meet, Javier, a struggling artist attending Madrid’s Escuela de Arte y Oficios, also worked as a waiter and even performed as a stripper once. But his financial difficulties were what inspired him to pursue acting. Javier started going to auditions for side jobs and tiny roles to supplement his income, but his natural skill made it clear that he was more than simply a pretty face.

The Poetry Beefcake

Javier got a role in the 1990 Spanish movie The Ages of Lulu after trying out (simply to kill time) for it. This led to several other tiny film parts.

But Javier got his big break in Spain when he was cast as the principal bullfighter in Jamon Jamon opposite Cruz, who would later become his wife.

Javier kept appearing as a heartless beefcake in numerous Spanish movies up until he was cast as a gay Cuban poet in the 2000 film Before Night Falls. Because of the part, Javier received his first Oscar nomination, and overnight, he transformed from a Spanish hottie to a well-known actor worldwide. Overnight, Javier became more than just eye candy as tough offers flooded in.

Before making an appearance in the Hollywood blockbuster Collateral (2004) alongside Tom Cruise, he once again dived deep to play a Spanish poet who became quadriplegic in The Sea Inside, for which he won a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination. Javier, however, really cemented his place in Hollywood when he co-starred with Josh Brolin in the suspenseful Coen brothers film No Country for Old Men. He won the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe and Academy Awards for his gruesome portrayal of a callous killer.

Spain’s Most Popular Exports

The rising Hollywood actress caught the eye of renowned director Woody Allen and was chosen to star alongside Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall in his smash movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona, as well as reuniting with Cruz. In addition to receiving a third Golden Globe nod for his performance, Javier also made headlines when he and Penelope took their tangled on-screen affair off-screen and were photographed cuddling while on vacation.

When Javier and Penelope got married in a small ceremony in the Bahamas in July 2010, he and Penelope furthered their acquaintance with the third item in the movie’s title. Javier co-starred with Julia Roberts in the bestseller-turned-blockbuster Eat, Pray, Love in 2010. In September of the same year, the couple announced Penelope was four months pregnant.

The children of Penelope and Javier will undoubtedly surpass the Gerber child in beauty, but despite their extreme success, the extremely handsome pair has maintained a sense of balance. And with a variety of difficult roles already under his belt, his career is on track to put many legendary actors to shame.

“Everyone was laughing about my goofy haircut in No Country for Old Men—it was actually my hair. They asked me to grow it, and then one day we tried cutting it in this odd way. I said, ‘What happened? I need a mirror.’ I saw myself and said, ‘Wow, we got it.’ The strange look helps people to go, ‘There’s something out of sync in that guy. There’s something that doesn’t work.’”
