Who Is Javier Bardem

He’s the sexy Spaniard who keeps us glued to the screen with his liquid voice and three-dimensional roles. Now that he calls another one of Spain’s hottest exports, Penelope Cruz, his wife and baby mama, this couple may be a little too caliente to handle.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem has a net worth of $20 million dollars, as of 2021.

A Family Business

Born in the Canary Islands of Spain, young Javier was no stranger to the ins and outs of show business. His mother, Pilar, was an actress, his uncle, Juan Antonio, was a filmmaker and his grandfather, Rafael, was an actor. It’s safe to say that Javier’s fate in the entertainment business was sealed before he could even talk. As a toddler, Javier frequented the theater where his mother performed and watched her prepare to take the stage every night, often seeing her vomit due to nerves before making her grand entrance.

Maybe it was his mother’s routine visits to the trash can just before going on stage that turned him off of acting, but as Javier grew up he became more interested in a different art form—painting. As a struggling artist studying at Madrid’s Escuela de Arte y Oficios Javier also worked as a waiter and even did a one off gig as a stripper in attempt to make ends meet. But it was this financial struggles that led him to acting. Javier began auditioning for small parts and extra roles to make some dough on the side but his innate talent led him to be recognized as more than just a face to fill space.

From Beefcake To Poet

In 1990, after auditioning (just to kill some time) for the Spanish film The Ages of Lulu, Javier ended up landing a role in the flick, which led to several other small film parts. But Javier scored his big break in Spain when he nabbed a lead role in Jamon Jamon as a bullfighter opposite his future wife, Cruz.

Javier continued to star in a slew of Spanish films, often typecast as a callous beefcake, until he landed a role in the 2000 film Before Night Falls as a gay Cuban poet. The role landed him his first Oscar nomination and Javier suddenly went from Spanish hunk to internationally respected actor. Overnight, more challenging opportunities came pouring in—Javier wasn’t just eye-candy anymore.

He once again dug deep to play a Spanish poet turned quadriplegic in The Sea Inside for which he received a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination before he appeared in the Hollywood blockbuster Collateral (2004) opposite Tom Cruise. But Javier really made his mark in Tinseltown when he starred in the dark Coen brothers thriller No Country for Old Men with Josh Brolin. His chilling role as a heartless killer earned him a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Spain’s Hottest Exports

The budding Hollywood superstar stole the attention of fame-making director Woody Allen and was cast in his hit film Vicky Cristina Barcelona opposite Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall, as well as once again teaming up with Cruz. Javier landed a third Golden Globe nomination for his performance but that’s not all he scored—Javier and Penelope took their complicated onscreen romance off-screen when the sexy Spaniards were spotted getting cozy on vacation together.

In 2010 Javier starred alongside Julia Roberts in the bestseller turned blockbuster, Eat Pray Love, and got much more acquainted with the third item in the flick title when he and Penelope where married in an intimate Bahamas ceremony in July 2010. The couple announced that Penelope was four months pregnant in September of the same year.

While there is no doubt that Penelope and Javier’s offspring will put the Gerber baby to shame, the ridiculously attractive couple has managed to stay grounded throughout their uber-successful careers. And with a range of challenging roles already under his belt, his career is on pace to put a lot of acting legends to shame as well.

Defining Quote “Everyone was laughing about my goofy haircut in No Country for Old Men—it was actually my hair. They asked me to grow it, and then one day we tried cutting it in this odd way. I said, ‘What happened? I need a mirror.’ I saw myself and said, ‘Wow, we got it.’ The strange look helps people to go, ‘There’s something out of sync in that guy. There’s something that doesn’t work.’”
