Born February 18, 1983 in Chicago, Illinois, Jason Maxiell has always been a talented athlete. It was clear early on that his eye and hand coordination and reaction time were near perfect, and as he grew in height to 2.01 meters, it was clear he would be a great addition to the sport.

After leaving Newman Smith High School, Maxiell played basketball at the University of Cincinnati where he also earned his college degree.
